I'm not entirely sure the definition of a coaster here is entirely correct. I do not know of any coasters that intentionally had a shallow draft... rather that it was a side effect of a small ship. ▫Bad▫harlick♠ 09:40, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

And why would one have a small ship? For small profits? Or for a shallow draught, to work coastal waters and inland waterways?

Why would you have a small ship? To carry small cargoes (so the shipper does not have to pay more for a bigger ship that his cargo will not fill). Because it needs a smaller crew. To fit into small ports or rivers, which may have a substantial tidal range, so draft is not really an issue. And probably lots more reasons. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 18:55, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
