I've added this page after being astonished at what a demanding yet unglamorous task this was. The sources are well worth reading. JRPG (talk) 20:01, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
- Found contributing to this article almost as unglamorous a task as coaling itself. However I think it is impossible to understand the Russian defeat at Battle of Tsushima without understanding the immense problems they had just in fueling, problems that don't exist with sail or with nuclear powered ships. This article is a great little piece but perhaps a tad too lyrical for an encyclopedia. It is particularly noticeable in the "United States Navy procedures" section. Well written but too focused on the anecdotal and perhaps exaggerated. What makes these procedures US specific? In addition, for the purposes of removing coal dust from one's skin, surely sea water should be fine? Finally, that "a shipmate might be asked to scrub another's back" is unnecessary; otherwise, we could talk of how "Expletives might have been used to accompany the exercise", etc.
