Cleanup needed

Various problems are evident. First, there is considerable overlap with her life story that is not given explicit ties to the filmed version. In other words, while one obviously can't tell the story of a biographical film without telling something of the story of the subject's life, the first several lines of the article do not make reference to what of her life is (or isn't) shown in the film. Second, the later lines of the article become bogged down by excessive parentheticals; this tendency is one I notice easily because I share it. Third, very little is said to give an overall sense of the storyline of the film itself, and much of what is said is buried in the aforementioned parentheticals. The big white field that preceeds the text looks HORRIBLE! Sissy Spacek's acting and singing is outstanding!!!! She is very talented but the script was really, really, bad. For example, Lynn is made to look so stupid its rediculous. They dont mention one word about Crystal Gayle but they do mention Patsy Kline but thats a minor thing compared to the degredation of Lynn and females in general. The only way that things like "Lynn is made to look so stupid" can belong in the article is if there is published criticism of the film that can be cited that says so. Whether you or I think that is just our POV and others can disagree. As far as giving details of her life here, the comment is correct in that this article should be about the film and its version of her life. For a presumably objective overview of Lynn's life, the blue link to Loretta Lynn should suffice; it is not necessary to repeat details of her life not represented in the film in this article and in fact could be seen as not only unnecessary, but confusing. Her husband in the movie said when she became pregnant, "We found something you are good at." This is patently offensive language.

Irrespective of whether any of us finds it patently offensive and insulting, the point is that for the claim to belong in the article, it has to come from an external source (see WP:V and WP:RS), such as a published review or a journal article. Encyclopedia articles are supposed to distill the existing published sources, while pointing the reader to the published sources so that the reader can verify independently that this critique is out there in authoritative places, not just my opinion or yours. Naming

Shouldn't this article be 'Coal Miner's Daughter (film)' since there is also the book on which it is based which is notable enough to have its own article at some point? Rlquall 20:02, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm watching the commentaries and other extras on the 25th anniversary DVD, but I'm a bit too tired to put the info in there correctly, so I'm parking it here for now:

• In her interview with Apted, LL not only repeats the story about picking Sissy Spacek's picture out of a pile of 8x10s, she also says that while SS was studying her, they appeared at the Grand Ole Opry about three times and "Opry members could not tell when I would quit a verse and she'd take on a verse. Now that's how close we were." (in terms of the sound) She also says that SS's mimicry of her accent was so accurate that LL's twin daughters, age nine at the time of the film, said to her, "Mommy, I want you to quit talking like Sissy Spacek."
• In their commentary, Apted and Spacek mention several times their conviction that they were permitted to take certain directions in the filming, such as allowing Spacek to sing the songs herself, only because the studio did not believe the movie would be very successful and thus did not feel the need to supervise closely. They also say that they believe the reason that Tommy Lee Jones was not recognized with any acting awards was because Doolittle Lynn was not well-known, and therefore, those who chose the nominees had no background to recognize the excellence of his portrayal. Lynn also expresses in her interview that she believes Jones' portrayal was exceptionally accurate and merited awards.

Older VHS release

Coal Miner's Daughter was also released on VHS sometime in the early 1980s, when Universal was still using the "MCA Videocassette" brand for VHS releases. My family has a copy of this release somewhere. -lee (talk) 01:38, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Harrison Ford originally as who?

Article very briefly says that "Harrison Ford was originally cast." This needs two things: 1: Who was Ford originally cast as? I assume Doolittle Lynn or Ted Webb, but don't know. 2: This statement needs a citation. Thanks. Sir Rhosis (talk) 18:59, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
