This page was not edited with the intention of being a "mountain climbing guide." It was more of an explanation of rock climb techniques. Perhaps the first paragraph would make it seem like a guide. That will be removed.

I will turn it into an article of sort. At least partly in paragraph form

Foot Techniques edit

Edging

While edging, the climber uses the inside of the foot to stand on a foot hold. The more accurate area of the foot used would be the inside of the big toe.

Backstepping

This is similar to edging but using the ouside of the foot. Outside near the pinkie toe.

Smearing

Smearing is to place one foot, preferably centered, straight on the wall, step up and quickly put the other foot on the next foot hold.

Heel Hook

The heel is hooked over a hold to reduce stress on the arms.

Toe Hook

The toe hook is similar to the heel hook except the toe hooks on an under cling or an arete.

Rock On

This technique is applied when the climber places their weight on one foot, places the other foot on the next foot hold then rolls the weight from the lower foot across the body to the higher foot.

Flag

The climber "flags" one foot out to counterbalance or stop the swinging motion.

Crimp

Hand grip in which the fingerstips are placed on a small horizontal ledge and the fingers are bent and held very rigid.

Open Hand

Hand grip in which finger tips find the positive grip on a sloping horizontal hand hold. The hand is held open while the fingertips are kept rigid.

Side Pull

The side pull is a vertical hand hold. The positive grip is achieved by crimping or open handing (whichever is necessary)the vertical hold and leaning.

Under Cling

When the positive grip is achieved by a crimp or open hand with the palms up.

Gaston

The hand is rotated past 90 and before 180 degrees to the center. (clockwise for left hand, counterclockwise for right hand)The thumb will be pointing down with this technique.

Pinch

Various finger thumb pinch combinations.
