Species Redirect

Please remove the redirect from Clematis virginiana to Clematis. This specific species requires its own page just as all plant species do. Thank you. thistlechick 19:32, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

are climatis deer resistant?

A number of the informational websites and chat rooms state that clematis is deer resistant. Also not eaten by insects. Those are very general statements, so not clear if true for all species. David notMD (talk) 14:48, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

The following addition is moved here for discussion. Citations are needed for it and/or the text that is on the page. "Clematis are NOT acid-intolerant calciphytes, but grow equally well on slightly acidic soils as on basic soils, but the large flowering hybrids prefer a rather forest type soil to field soil. When growing the large flowering hybrids in an acidic soil they are less prone to "Clematis Stem Wilt"". Nadiatalent (talk) 23:26, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

I've searched quite a few webpages for confirmation either way regarding ph. Reliable sources such as the RHS don't mention it (and nor does the Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs, except for C. vitalba being often found on chalk). A couple of clematis nursery websites asserted that a calcareous soil wasn't necessary, so I figured it was best to remove the "acid-intolerant calciphytes" sentence. Additionally I used the Hillier Manual as a ref for Clematis having a preference for cool, moist root conditions. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 21:53, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

@Invasive Spices: The website was already listed, a double listing seemed to be a bit much. The spam referred to www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk, which is a commercial site, selling plants. Kleuske (talk) 09:10, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
