Murals in fiction

The murals are featured in the first chapter of the fiction book 'Dog Days'. More details can be found on Clarion Alley. Are any one of the murals a red spider-creature with tentacles? It seems that the photos of Clarion Alley have all been taken down. If art is in a public place like a street is it copyrighted? Do the artists need to post these pictures themselves or grant permission? If I take a picture of a building, is it protected under the copyright of the architect? Just wondering.
