Talk:Clare Leighton

Contradiction

edit

The article says:

"Clare Veronica Hope Leighton (1901 - 1989) was an English/American artist, writer and illustrator, best known for her wood engravings."

and then

"Clare Leighton was born in London on April 12, 1899."

So, which is it? 1901 or 1899? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.55.70.171 (talk) 17:39, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's 1899 - she appears, aged 2, in the 1901 Census.

Actually 1898 (birth registered); she was very nearly aged 3 at the Census. Nedrutland (talk) 08:59, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Name?

edit

DNB gives her name as 'Leighton, Clara Ellaline Hope [Clare]', presumably taken from her birth record. Does anyone know how she came to be known as 'Clare Veronica'? Did she choose to alter it, is it how her name appears in books she published or work she signed? Or is it a mistake? RLamb (talk) 12:56, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Her name was registered as "LEIGHTON Clare Ellaline H. M." in Marylebone RD (H. M. possibly Hope Marie?). There is a (currently unsourced) statement that she was "baptised with the name Clare Marie Veronica Leighton on 26 May 1898". The ODNB has "Leighton, Clara [sic] Ellaline Hope". The subject needs clarification. Nedrutland (talk) 08:59, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
