Population?

The introduction states that the 2001 census has the population of the Melbourne CC at 46,000, yet the info box on the right has it for the 2001 census at 60,745. Which is correct?Mdgr 03:19, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

This is the set of information from ABS that should be used. It shows a total count of 67,784, minus 7,039 overseas visitors. That makes an official population of 60,745. So, the infobox is correct. JohnnoShadbolt 03:30, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Lists

Why do the lists (for example the school lists) include institutions not in the city of Melbourne...am I missing something about this?

Local government history

Could somebody from Oz put something in the History section to explain how and why the local elected officials were twice replaced for a while by appointed commissioners? The city's own page [1] is damned coy about how and why the State did this. --Orange Mike 19:28, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Logo

right

The logo was recently replaced on this page to the black and white version, seen here. If you take a look at the website, as well as many other sources, the current logo is the coloured, cyan version, as seen to the right. If an SVG version is wanted, the black and white one should at least be coloured correctly. Cheers, Chicken-7 ^talk 21:39, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Same happened to City of Monash too recently. I was going to suggest anyone with Inkscape could fix it, but it looks rather complex - really the person who did the original upload should have done this if they intended to replace the logo. Orderinchaos 21:56, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Requested moves of 30+ Melbourne street names

Editors here may be interested in this multiple RM that I have initiated. My preamble:

These articles are all concerned with street names in Melbourne. (I would have include another 17, but the template has a limit of 30.) I do not support these moves; but I know that some very active editors do. It is time to air the matter, once and for all. Is it better to have an article on Collins Street in Melbourne called simply Collins Street, or to have it called Collins Street, Melbourne as at present? Which option serves the needs of Wikipedia's worldwide readership better? In almost all cases that I list there is no content in the destination article, just a redirect. And in almost all cases there is no Wikipedia article that very closely resembles the Melbourne-oriented one. There are, for example, no other Collins Streets with their own articles.

Your vote ("Support" or "Oppose") would be welcome, along with your reasons.

Brief semi-protection

Hi, thanks for your help. I'm really sorry for the confusion. My name is Emma and I am not experienced at using Wikipedia at all so have clearly made some mistakes. Apologies. It wasn't intentional and just a reflection of my lack of experience. I have made an error trying to update the City of Melbourne wiki page. It is currently out of date and has a list of Councillors that are no longer elected and additional information that is no longer required. The information I have tried to update it with is correct and reflected on the City of Melbourne website. There is an election in October and it is important for the City of Melbourne page to be up to date as people begin looking at our details before voting. I didn't realize why my changes were originally rejected, I thought it was just because my email address was incorrect so I tried from a personal account. Sorry about that. Can you please let me know what my next steps are to try and update the page? Thanks for your help. Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. :)

Basically, all you have to do is what you've done above. As someone with an association with the council it's best you don't edit the article directly, but you're free to propose changes here, as you've done, and if there's a general consensus in favour of them they can get added. For anyone else reading this the proposed edit is here.

Hopefully your post will attract some comments shortly and the edit can be made, partly made or not made depending on that discussion. If no one comes by to comment you might think about posting a brief note to somewhere like the Australian Wikipedias Noticeboard to let people know there's something to comment on, but up to you.

Hi User:203.26.235.14 (Emma), have you read (or at least skimmed through) the Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide linked by Euryalus? The advice section says that editors with a conflict of interest (COI) should use a registered account and how they can disclose their COI/ paid editor status. When you request an edit on a talk page you need to state clearly what you want added or removed and give sources. Adding {{edit COI}} to the request adds it to the list of edit requests needing attention. Removing referenced content may be controversial, but updating the list of councillors should be fine. If you need any help you are welcome to ask at Wikipedia:Teahouse, which will probably respond more quickly than Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard. TSventon (talk) 15:34, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Declaration of COI: I’m an employee of City of Melbourne and the information on the Wiki page is out of date and incorrect. Updates will be factual only and in line with City of Melbourne website. The update is to the section titled 'Composition of current Council'. It is to add in the date of the upcoming election and update the list of Councillors. The list is out of date and includes the names of people no longer elected to government. These changes are on our official website at https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/Pages/home.aspx

I would like to replace the current text under 'Composition of current Council' with:

The City of Melbourne is an unsubdivided municipality consisting of a directly elected Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor, and nine councillors. Since 2008, all Victorian councillors serve a four year term. The next general election will be held on Saturday 24 October 2020.

During a general election, the City of Melbourne holds two simultaneous elections – one to elect the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor (leadership team) and the other to elect the nine councillors. All residents are entitled to vote in the election, as well as up to two of each of the following: non-residential owners and occupiers of rateable property. If a corporation solely owns or occupies rateable property in the municipality, then the corporation must appoint two company officers (director and/or company secretary, or equivalent) to represent it and vote on its behalf.

Emmuldoon, I have updated the councillors (and party affiliations) as I think that is uncontroversial. As Euryalus advised you need to get consensus before changes that may be controversial can be made. At the moment there is a backlog of edit requests and yours is number 52 out of 80. You will need to explain all the changes you are requesting in detail: a recommended format is:

• Information to be added or removed: ADD TEXT HERE
• Explanation of issue: ADD TEXT HERE
• References supporting change: ADD URL AT LEAST
• Signature ~~~~

Hi thank you for updating the list of Councillors. Much appreciated. There's a problem with the middle column of the table titled 'Party'. It lists some Councillors as 'Team Doyle' and 'Team Morgan'. This information was not there in the last approved update. It is incorrect as these parties do not exist anymore. On the City of Melbourne website, only their names are listed. Can this middle column please be removed or at least the references to 'Team Doyle' and 'Team Morgan'. Thanks heaps.

Hi, Thanks for filling in the template for removing or updating the "Party" column. The link shows a list of councillors, but doesn't show that councillors don't have party affiliations. Do you have a link or links that show the current party affiliations of former 'Team Doyle' and 'Team Morgan' councillors?

Your original edit i) added a sentence saying there is more information on the council web site and ii) removed the last 2 paragraphs. If you are stlll requesting those changes I would suggest putting them into the same format. I would advise you to base your arguments on Wikipedia policies not Melbourne Council policies: the policy on neutral point of view WP:NPOV, including due weight WP:DUE could be relevant.

If you click on the highlighted number of requests in the edit request tag above you can see the list of edit requests (yours is 41st but some of the earlier requests have had a partial response). Your second request isn't listed as your signature didn't work, but you don't need a second request as you are just explaining the first one. To sign your posts add four tildes as above, but not the nowiki...nowiki code which makes the four tildes display as text rather than generating a signature. Hi, the link I provided shows each councilor. They do not have party affiliations. That's all I have, sorry. Team Doyle is an outdated party from when Mayor Doyle was in power. He is no longer part of City of Melbourne council since 2018. (This is confirmed under the table by a sentence created by a wiki admin). Same with Team Morgan. It's incorrect information. Could it please be removed? It wasn't there is the last approved update, so I am not sure where it's come from. It seems to have been added in but I'm not sure how. If it's not possible to remove the column, can these parts that have been added in be removed? I just want the page to be up to date in case anyone goes to it before the election in October. Hi. I don't want to make any controversial edits and the editor who reviews your request when it gets to the top of the list may feel the same. Removing the party column is potentially controversial: it was removed on 13 January 2020 by "CityofMelbourne" and later added back. I don't know how changes to parties are normally handled in Australian articles: the party names listed come from the Victorian Electoral Commission website. I would therefore suggest that you post a link to this discussion at Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board to request comments on your proposed edits. Wikipedia is based on information published by independent reliable sources, so it will not always follow the council's website. TSventon (talk) 18:57, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

I have not actioned the replacement of the whole section as you have not explained what you want to add and remove and why. I have set the edit request to answered=yes.
