Cornelius Rost edit

Someone needs to verify whether the first part of the following statement in the geography section is true: "It was formerly the setting for a Dalstroy gulag site and the alleged starting point for Clemens Forell's epic journey in the novel As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me." The German sources concerning Cornelius Rost indicate that at the time of the alleged escape (1949) there was no Gulag lead mine at Cape Dezhnev. They do not indicate whether there was one at later time. If not, then statement needs further modification. I agree, I have long had doubts over the veracity of this, it just seemed too far fetched to be true. I would be happy to have the "alleged" word moved to the beginning of the sentence to indicate that everything is alleged. This book indicates a number of gulag camps existing in Chukotka, but it also has camps on Wrangel Island, which I also doubt, so I wouldn't say it was impossible. File:ArkhipelagGulag.jpg This file from Memorial illustrates the various camps in Chukotka, highlighting a number of camps on Wrnagel Island, but also some near Provideniya. The position of the camps is in line with the establishment of settlements and roads in the area and it seems there wre camps near to Cape Dezhnev. As such, I would not say it was impossible for a PoW to have been there, just maybe not exactly on the Cape and that at best this is a bit of poetic license to establish the author as starting as far away as possible. I still doubt the whole story though.Fenix down (talk) 09:06, 31 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
