Donations to Sinn Fein

Fearganainm: It is true, and not staggering at all. Feeney was one of a number of influential Irish-Americans who got behind the Peace Process in its early days. Bill Flynn, head of Mutual of America and Donald Keough, head of Coca-Cola, were two others that spring to mind. They supported the Irish government and lobbied on its behalf, and funding Sinn Féin's Washington DC office was part of that support. It was done in full consultation with the Government of Ireland and John Hume. At a time when the British government was refusing to talk with Sinn Féin (publicly, of course), this was a brave act by Feeney. This is a drop in the ocean compared to the enormous money this man has given Irish society, particularly our education system- well over $1Billion to the education system alone. He has given more than all others combined. This was at a time, the 1980s, when rural Ireland was decimated by emigration and the Irish state had not the money to fund our education system properly. But you will not find Chuck Feeney's name anywhere in an Irish university, at his own request.
