The Chirano deposit was first recognized by geologists from Reunion Mining plc, a small, listed UK exploration firm, from 1995 onwards. I was on the discovery team.

Prior to 1995: Work by the Placer Outokumpu Exploration JV outlined a geochemical anomaly over a strike length of about 7 km. Trenching and sampling of old adits indicated that it could represent near-surface mineralization of a grade and width that would be amenable to low-cost open pit heap leach mining. (Reunion 12/95 AR 4/25/96) 1995: Reunion began an exploration program over Anomaly D, including soil geochemistry, deep trenching, and shallow DD. Metallurgical work was also planned to test the amenability of the ore to heap leaching. (Reunion 12/95 AR 4/25/96) The first of seven gold-bearing zones was tested by drilling and trenching, and an indicated resource of approximately 110,000 oz was identified. (Reunion PR 4/1/96) 1996: In May, Reunion calculated an oxide resource for the Obra anomaly based on trenching and wide-spaced DD. Resources, to a depth of 25 m, were calculated at 1.58 million mt grading 2.04 g/mt Au. (Red Back 6/98 AR 9/24/98) Exploration at Chirano was suspended in April pending the formulation of environmental guidelines by the Ghanaian government in respect to mineral exploration in the Forest Reserves. 1997: The exploration guidelines were received in November, and the necessary permits were issued. An exploration program designed to define the surface extent of the mineralization was expected to be completed by May 1998. The results were to be used to plan a comprehensive drilling program to fully determine the oxide reserve prior to the start of a feasibility study. (Reunion PR 11/27/97) In December, exploration resumed on the property. (MJ 12/5/97) 1998: In June, Red Back agreed to earn up to an 85% interest in the property from Reunion by spending $7.6 million in cash and on exploration. (AUS 6/15/98)
