This page should be renamed

I suggest that this page be renamed to City wall (China). This is English Wikipedia and not a dictionary. --Niohe 17:52, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

The interwiki to zh.wiki points to 城墙, but the en.wiki link on that page points to Defensive wall. Discrepancy?

I'm editing this article to emphasise a comparison with city walls or town walls rather than castles, since 城墙 is generally a city wall or town wall, not a castle or citadel. Only in exceptional cases, such as the Forbidden City, would the 城墙 be comparable to the walls of a citadel. --Sumple (Talk) 23:51, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I challenge the idea of changing into Chinese City Wall Cheng Qiang is more representative.by the way,City Wall in wiki describes the defensive wall, while Cheng Qiang in China is the equivalent of Castel.When it is given the name of Chinese city wall,the outsiders cann't distinguish Denfensive Wall with Cheng Qiang.Ksyrie

Ksyrie, this is not the place to reinvent the English language. The walls that surround Chinese cities are called "city walls" almost uniformly in English language literature. Almost any Chinese-English dictionary would list "city wall" as the translation for 城墙. I doubt that you can find a single credible source that uses "Cheng Qiang". Besides, you're not even spelling the Chinese word right in pinyin, the conventional spelling is chengqiang.--Niohe 15:42, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Well,Cheng Qiang isn't an english word,it's a Pinyin.Sometimes,loan word came into language,because the thing which it describes is novel or original in another language.Cheng Qiang really meets all the requirements.Ksyrie

If you can make a case that chengqiang is used as a loanword in English, then fair enough give us some quotations. But it's not up to you to create new loanwords in English. In Wikipedia we only deal with WP:VP information. --Niohe 19:17, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Maybe Cheng Qiang isnot english,but Chinese City Wall didn't exist in english neither.If there were the existing word to use,why bother using a new word? Ksyrie

Move, don't Cut and Paste

I noticed that Cheng Qiang was not moved back to Chinese city wall. Instead Chinese city wall was cut and pasted to its original version. This operation destroies the edit history and violates the Wikipedia's rule. --Neo-Jay 16:09, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Very difficult. The only way seems to ask an administrater at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move Cheng Qiang's version of 14:26, 19 November 2006 to Chinese city wall. Then the only purpose of this request is to restore the edit history. Another solution is to move Cheng Qiang's version of 14:26, 19 November 2006 to Chinese city walls first and redirect Chinese city wall to Chinese city walls, then request administrator to move Chinese city walls to Chinese city wall. Definition

This article needs a better definition. At the moment, it basically says, "Chinese city walls are Chinese city walls or town walls", which is like saying "a rock is a rock". Are there any other sources we can use for this? Khoikhoi 19:47, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

How about: Chinese city walls refer to civic defensive systems used to protect towns and cities in China in pre-modern times. The system consists of walls, towers, and gates, which are often built to a uniform standard throughout the empire.
