I once read a story about a passenger in the ticket office at Euston. Hoping to confuse the booking clerk, he asked for a ticket to "th' Bent". To this, the booking clerk (who was originally from the Bolton/Wigan/Leigh area) responded with "Chow or checker?", Chowbent being an old name for Atherton. I would like to source this so that it can be mentioned properly, with ref. Hopefully this source will also disclose whether the passenger intended to travel to Chequerbent, to Atherton Bag Lane or to Howe Bridge. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:15, 28 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
