Orphaned references in Chennai

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Chennai's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 09:27, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Please change the pronunciation Audio file to the updated version I have uploaded to wikimedia commons. The path to the file is " https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Ta-ind-Chennai_EshwerShiv.ogg " . I had provided a pronunciation file on 25th October 2017 to replace an old one with an incorrect pronuncation. Recently I was asked by a user to use the proper language code convention to name the file, which I have done now, with a minor change to the file length (990 ms of silence removed). Thanks. Under the History title, the 4th paragraph reads: "The Portuguese first arrived in 1522 and built a port called São Tomé after the Christian apostle, St. Thomas, who is believed to have preached in the area between 52 and 70 CE. In 1612, the Dutch established themselves near Pulicat, north of Chennai.[52]"

Reasoning behind edit: I believe this first sentence omits an extremely noteworthy christian (and potential tourism/pilgrimage) point of interest that St. Thomas is also believed to have died at St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) in 72 CE, which is a small hillock in Chennai. (obviously the 70 CE needs to be changed to 72 CE which is considered more accurate).

My proposed edit: "The Portuguese first arrived in 1522 and built a port called São Tomé after the Christian apostle, St. Thomas, who is believed to have preached in the area from 52 CE until his death on St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) in 72 CE."

Also, in this sentence, the words "St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai)" would include a hyperlink to the wiki article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Thomas_Mount .

Thank you for your consideration. Ammo2099 (talk) 19:53, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

Pronunciation Guide

In the audio pronunciation of "Madras" in the very first line, the "r" is rolled. That's how North Indians, or Hindi-speakers pronounced Madras, but South Indians, particularly long-time residents of the city, would pronounce it with a soft "r". It might be worth putting both version in, as the distinction was a linguistically-sensitive one in the past, and still is for certain populations in the city. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krsabhinav (talkcontribs) 05:48, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

There is a grammar error. Two conjunctions in succession "and" in the sentence below.

As such, it is termed "India's health capital". As a growing metropolitan city in a developing country, Chennai confronts substantial pollution and other logistical and socio-economic problems.[18][19]

I would suggest an edit as follows

Changing settlement type to Metropolis from Megacity

Megacity by definition needs to have atleast 10 million population. No reliable source puts Chennai population more than 9 million. Therefore it is prudent to change it to metropolis. Ab207 (talk) 15:06, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

deodkss BawinV (talk) 21:24, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

depends on your definition of Chennai. whether youre talking about Chennai city proper or the Chennai metropolitan area. BawinV (talk) 21:25, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Megacity lists Chennai along with Bangalore with 2018 estimate sources from UN and others. So I think there's no issue here. Shanze1 (talk) 08:52, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

In area and population, it refers as Megacity which is not an apt description as city city proper's population is less than 10 million, therefore it should be changed to City proper or Chennai City. Ab207 (talk) 12:33, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Regarding the Neutrality tag in Chennai article

There are many statements in the lead section itself that are promotional and advertising in nature. They aren't adhering to WP:Neutral point of view. Please note that the lead section is the most-read section in any article. The Lead should be an unreferenced summary of referenced statements. This article's lead section is written like an Advertisement. Please read this WP:Advertisement

Some of the issues in the lead are

  • "Biggest educational and economic centre in South India" - promotional, biased and vague statement - What about Bangalore?
  • "Chennai is the safest city in India" - Advertisement in the lead and subjective. Several cities with reliable sources claim to be the safest in India. But they don't mention it in Wikipedia.
  • "Chennai was ranked the best city in India" - Advertisement in the lead
  • "Ninth cosmopolitan city in the world" - Advertisement and promotional in the lead

This is just a sample, and there are few other promotional marketing statements in the lead itself such as

  • "India's health capital"
  • "city worth visiting and worth living in for long term", etc.

So clearly looking at just the Lead section alone, this article isn't adhering to WP:Neutral point of view.

Cheers,
Aviator423 (talk) 03:39, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

"Cosmopolitan" isn't a promotional word, man. Go easy with the tagging there. Many articles including Toronto use this in the lead. 117.213.164.243 (talk) 05:05, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Should we remove the nickname "The Detroit of India" from the lede?

Wikipedia is for a global audience, so it sounds very American-centric to list this as a nickname in the article's lede (3rd paragraph). The US government is cited as the source for this nickname, but it would likely not be used by anyone outside America, and we don't know how common its usage even is. Additionally, it sounds very dated, and I doubt even modern Americans would find this phrase relevant.Pythagimedes (talk) 22:34, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

@Pythagimedes If you scroll down to Economy section, you can see that it has 4 citations in total, one each from US Department of Commerce, US ITC, The Economist newspapar and another book. I would say it has sufficient secondary sources other than US govt. (Pinging @Cristiano Tomás who removed the lead in Special:Diff/1026392328). -- DaxServer (talk) 08:56, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

History Siege of Madras 1758-59: Who was in charge?

The British "resisted a French siege attempt in 1759 under the leadership of Eyre Coote.[63]" If someone with greater expertise could review this issue, I believe Lawrence Stringer, along with the governor, Pigot, and the council may have actually had command. Eyre Coote did not arrive in India until after the siege of Madras had been lifted, so he was most definitely not in charge of the garrison. Wendigo Lake (talk) 14:41, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

Luxury flats in Pune are available from. You must define luxury 😀 Italian marble flooring Ceiling-to-floor windows/panels Huge private terraces Panoramic views Private elevator Full biometric security Double-floor entrance lobby when security and reception Private mini swimming pool Private theatre room Fully fitted kitchen from the likes of Häfele, Hettich, etc. Built-in appliances from top brands including oven, m/w, washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc All furniture and furnishings The servant's room with a separate entrance obviously Best of the electronics and complete home automation I would suggest you, scout, for flats based on your requirements. Baner is one of the expensive localities where a good 2 BHK will cost you anything between 90 lakhs to 1.2 cr based on the specifications. My recommendations would be to check Nandan, Marvel, and Pride projects in the area for RTM properties even though they will be a little expensive you can save yourself a lot of headaches later on. Also if you go a little interior there are F residences, etc which have many resale listings on offer. A note of caution, check for flood lines before you finalize the deal & also look for the condition of the flat, any existing litigation issues, occupancy certificate, conveyance deed, etc. This will help you make a much more secure deal. Baner is always better. It has good roads, water, etc. with proper infrastructure. It is already in corporation(pmc) limits. Whereas mahalunge was a gram panchayat and was not in corporation limits till last year, but gov. included mahalunge in corporation limits in the last month only. If you have a good budget you can go with banner or mahalunge also has a good future with the metro project, new roads are coming, and mahalunge man is a high-tech city project, and also it is a banner annex. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KKGjjb45 (talkcontribs) 06:57, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

“The largest city of the state in area and population, Chennai is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, and is the most prominent cultural, economic and educational centre of South India.”

The statement “Chennai is the most prominent cultural, economic, and educational centre of South India” is subjective. This could be remedied by modifying the sentence to say “Chennai is a prominent cultural, economic, and educational centre of South India.” Iflikeyouuuu (talk) 14:36, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

This is a lead statement that reflects several other supportive statements within the article that are backed by reliable sources. Although the "largeness" of a city may vary from decade to decade since population of cities fluctuate constantly, the traditional influence and importance of a city in a particular region remain fairly constant for a much greater period (several centuries or even millennia). The population of London, for example, has fluctuated several times in the past century and it may not be "the largest city" per se, but its importance remains fairly constant throughout history. The above statement IMHO is a reflection of similar thing with respect to Chennai. Rasnaboy (talk) 05:59, 24 December 2022 (UTC)

Portuguese possible Etymology of Madras?

The article mentions two portuguese phrases that could be the origin for the name Madras: "Mãe de Deus" and "Madre de Dios", but the first one doesn't have the actual "Madr-" sound and the second one is not a portuguese phrase at all, but spanish. Portuguese "Deus" derives from the same latin word - "Deus" - and the variant "Dios" was never used in portuguese, only spanish. Also, none of the two phrases are actually mentioned in the source provided, but "Madre de Deus", which is a correct phrase, since "Madre" does exist in portuguese as an alternative and archaic form of "mother" (the word actually used most of the time is "Mãe"). I suggest rewriting that part, to go as follows: "There are also suggestions that it may have originated from the Portuguese phrase Madre de Deus, which means "mother of God", due to Portuguese influence on the port city, specifically referring to a Church of St. Mary.[59]" Fernandodaher (talk) 03:52, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
