Good article review

edit

(This is my first good article review, so please bear with me. Also, thanks to User:Dihydrogen monoxide for taking me through this process via Google Talk.)

I'm placing this article on hold, pending some suggested improvements. Below are my comments.

1. It is well written.

  • The lead looks good to me.
  • There are some wordings that seem a little bit awkward to me:
  • "Because of influences from his father" - it seems to me that this might better read "influenced by his father" or something similar. Done.
  • "...expressed that all of the guidelines of the DPP should be revised" - "expressed" seems like a very odd choice of verb for this sentence.
  • "...the proposal of the modification..." - this is a confusing wording. Would "proposed modification" convey the intended meaning? What about "proposal to modify"? Done.
  • In the "Rise in politics" section, Chen Shui-bian is consistently referred to by his full name. This comes across a little awkwardly; would it make sense to refer to him as "Shui-ban" or in some other abbreviated way? I understand that it may not be, and I personally have little understanding of the relevant conventions. I just thought I'd raise it. Done.
  • "Chen sought to continue constructing..." - I'd word this as "...sought to continue construction of..." Done.
  • "Chen received the flag of the World Games, formally making Kaohsiung the host city of World Games 2009" - This seems awkward to me. Could it be re-worded? Done.
  • "...offered to resign three times since the riot." - "Since" doesn't seem to be the right word, here. I would suggest re-wording as "offered to resign three times", since it's already clear that these offers came after the riot. Done.
  • "Then-premier Frank Hsieh..." - I don't think the "Then" is necessary, since it's clear that we're talking about the person who was premier at the relevant time, and not necessarily the person who is now premier.

2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.

  • Generally good, although I can't read some of the references for language reasons, which puts me at a bit of a disadvantage.
  • From what I've gathered of the Google translation of the second reference, it doesn't include information about Chen's family background (parents), which means that that needs a reference.
  • The last sentence of the "Rise in politics" section also needs a reference. Done.

3. It is broad in its coverage.

  • I have some concerns, as this is quite a short article.
  • Is there no detail available about how he spent his ten years as legislator? Did he sponsor any legislation? Did he take any noteworthy political positions?
  • There are a few statements in the article that I think need some followup. Specifically:
  • "Chen pointed out that then-incumbent magistrate of Taoyuan County Annette Lu would be a better choice for Chen Shui-bian's presidential running mate than any other party member." - What made him think so? Was she then selected as running mate? Done.
  • "Chen Chi-mai, as a leader of the Justice Alliance faction, expressed that all of the guidelines of the DPP should be revised after the proposal of the modification of the pro-independence guideline." - How did he think they should be revised? After he expressed this opinion, what happened? Were the DPP's guidelines revised? If so, how? If not, why not? Done
  • "Chen sought to continue constructing the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (KMRT)" - So he sought to do this. Did he succeed? Done.
  • "He offered filmmakers, such as Tsai Ming-liang, various incentives for their award-winning films." - What were these incentives? What effect did they have? Done.
  • The fact that "Thai workers rioted over the draconian treatment they received as foreign workers" seems to be a pretty pivotal fact in this article. Could you expand a bit on this treatment?
  • As a minor point, the article says that his father was a politician. This makes me, as a reader, curious about what political office(s) he held. Could you provide that information? Done.
  • It's not mandatory, but is there any information publicly available about Chen's personal life (is he married, does he have kids, etc.)?

4. It is neutral.

  • The only problem I see here is where it says "Chen pointed out that then-incumbent magistrate of Taoyuan County Annette Lu would be..." The phrase "pointed out" implies that Chen's belief is the correct one. I would change it to "suggested" or something similar. Done.

5. It is stable.

  • No problems here.

6. It is illustrated, where possible, by images.

  • Good image, appropriately tagged and captioned. Pass.

I have placed the article on hold for a week, to allow for needed improvements to be made. Sarcasticidealist (talk) 09:34, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reviewing the article. I crossed out some of the things that I did to improve it, although I don't really know what to put other than "expressed" for well written second bullet.--Jerrch 20:38, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm very pleased with the progress that has been made, especially in the broadness of the article which I think is now satisfactory. The expansion has led to a couple of new issues, though:

  • "Lu was eventually selected as his running mate." This statement appears to be unsourced.
  • "Chen Chi-mai, as a leader of the Justice Alliance faction, agreed that DPP guidelines should be revised when another member proposed to modify the pro-independence guideline." I think this needs to be re-worded, possibly to something like "Chen Chi-mai, as a leader of the Justice Alliance faction, supported the proposal of another member to revise the DPP guidelines".
  • "Although many party members had similar views, the proposal was sent back for review." Sent back to where?

I think this is very close to GA status. Sarcasticidealist (talk) 02:48, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
