I've been around since the early days of BSD (late 70's) and it was common knowledge that it was named after Charlie Root the baseball player. I don't recall who did it and exactly when it came to be, but it was just something that was everywhere. --TruckOttr 23:55, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your answer confirming that. I'm only knowing Unix since 1994 the earliest, and never heard of that. But I'm not in the USA, so I don't know your baseball players too! ;-) Boism 00:15, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
