Changes made in text edit

The main section of the article is text lifted entirely from his "Times" obituary. As such it bore some weaknesses other editors may like to note, as to present day readers they appear out of context.

  • that his last publication was produced "at the beginning of this year" (obviously that of his death, not 2013.)
  • his post at Ministry of Pensions being held "during the war", which from having read his ODNB article I construe to mean the First World - then known as the Great - War, when the Ministry was founded.
  • assessments of his contribution to historical knowledge by the obituarist - which may become outdated by advances in knowledge during the intervening 87 years to now. These are best stated in quotes with source named, to date the comments.

I have therefore made changes to the references to place them in context for a reader in 2013.
