"First car in Detroit" not "First car", in Detroit

Just wanted to clarify that this refers to the "first car in detroit" - not "the first car" - that honour probably goes to this vehicle or if that wasn't actually made then I guess that goes to the fardier a vapeur. -EdwardLane (talk) 17:14, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps you didn't read the complete article. I also wrote King showed to the Detroit public his car, which probably was the first in Michigan, however not the first in the world nor even the first in the United States. --Doug Coldwell ^talk 18:09, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

That's what I wanted to comment on too - the article is misleading - it was not the first car which was in 1885 according to History_of_the_automobile#Internal_combustion_engines, but apparantly merely the first car in Detroit. I believe IF you read the article, you will see that it is fully referenced by many sources. Did you read the article? You have to do that FIRST before you can make a general comment "the article is misleading". Which sentence and reference do you dispute - please be specific! According to the article on Sylvester H. Roper, he built an automobile BEFORE 1870. I believe the link you are referring to is about petrol/gasoline-powered internal combustion engines that operate a self-propelled "horseless carriage", NOT about who built the first car.--Doug Coldwell ^talk 19:30, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

According to the book A most unique machine: the Michigan origins of the American automobile industry by George S. May (publisher Eerdmans, 1975) on page 17 it says Roper "...between 1859 and 1895 built ten operable steam cars..."--Doug Coldwell ^talk 19:44, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

According to this newspaper article the "Sam Hill" steam car went through the streets of Dearborn in 1860.--Doug Coldwell ^talk 19:52, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

In this newspaper article it talks about Roper having a 1863 steam car that he entered in county fairs in contests against horses - and always won! It says this steam auto is the oldest car in the United States (22 years before that you speak of).--Doug Coldwell ^talk 22:07, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
