Article 49 reads: "The Members of the United Nations shall join in affording mutual assistance in carrying out the measures decided upon by the Security Council." What does this actually require members to do? Do they have to contribute military units to support UN missions, for instance, if called upon to do so? Enforceable on non-members? edit

I'd like to know if Chapter 7 is enforceable on a non-UN member, and if so, under what legal justification. Does it matter if the country was a member and then gave up membership, as opposed to never having been a member?

I think this information would be an interesting addition to the article. Chapter 7 has been invoked in many conflicts. I find it strange that we don't have greater depth in an article devoted to this important convention.
