Mani Shankar Aiyar's "Chaiwala" comment

Mani Shankar Aiyar, otherwise a respected commentator, may have helped delivered a victory to Mody by referring to his humble chai wala background during the election. . BJP seized the opportunity by repeatedly referring to his chaiwala background.

Some questions have been raise about the accuracy of the claim that Modi sold chai at the Vadnagar station. It has been claimed that the railways station did not exist then.. There have been reports that there are plans to restore the chai stall and make it a tourist attraction.

Modi personally served tea to the visiting USA president Barrak Obama in 2015 to stress his humility.

Cultural changes since 1955

Note that in the 1955 "Shri 420", the chaiwala is using a copper samovar, and serves tea in cups with saucers (the one Nargis uses is visibly chipped). A few such samovars can still be occasionally be seen in India. Chai was the an anna (1/16 rupee) a cup. In late 50s, a cup of chai, was considered a suitable bribe for a policeman. Chai was 4-8 annas in sixties. In late seventies it was a rupee a cup (coffee in USA was then about 25 cents).

In "Shri 420" during the famous song "Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua Hai Pyar Se", the chaiwala is shown sipping tea from a saucer. At that time, as a child, I too always thought that the saucer is intended for cooling the tea, and that is how it should be consumed. I was shocked when I learned from my grandfather that tea is supposed to be sipped hot.

In India the stove is now generally a clay covered furnace, and chai is boiled in a pan. In 1970s, the cups were largely replaced by the sturdier "cutting" ribbed glasses (which can now be purchased on amazon or ebay, alson with the wire holder). In first class train compartments, tea served was still proper and using cups and saucers at least until 1960s. Malaiya (talk) 00:36, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
