NCAA

This article needs to verify his alleged NCAA wrestling championships. In what year and what weight class were these titles won? He does not appear to be on this list http://www.hickoksports.com/history/ncaawrestl.shtml This information should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Irv Stantz (talkcontribs) 05:18, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

What do you mean "alleged" NCAA championships?? Your magical little list there is very clearly incomplete to anyone with an IQ over 60.--109.155.231.202 (talk) 13:23, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

2x national champion

I haven't been able to locate any real world references to substantiate the claim that he won two national championships. Absent any evidence to the contrary I will remove it. Chael P. Sonnen is the greatest ufc fighter in the world

I did find a list of previous champions:

Line 1 leads a reader to believe that Sonnen holds a political office or has conducted a campaign. He filed paperwork to run for a state assembly position, but did not actually run. "Hypogonadism"

MMAjunkie.com medical columnist Dr. Johnny Benjamin called the "hypogonadism" explanation into question noting that "testicular atrophy and subsequent low testosterone are common and widely known side effects of anabolic-steroid use." I don't think so. He is a columnist. I question his expertise.
So that's one vote questioning the "expertise" of a medical doctor from a guy who doesn't even sign his comments in the talk section...  Mr JM  00:32, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Once again, the word you are attempting to use is the "you're" contraction. Perhaps you should just stick to spelling-out both words in their entirety.  Mr JM  23:36, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

It should not be included. Dr. Benjamin is not Sonnen's personal physician nor is he in any way involved in the case. He has no detailed information and his opinion, though professionally related, is pure speculation. One might call it talking out of one's ass. I think accepting such a statement as a wiki worthy fact would be akin to it being acceptable for me to accuse a diabetic of being a glutton, since diabetes can be caused by excessive sugar consumption. It can, however, also be present at birth so the factual correctness of the existence of adult onset diabetes aside, I would be wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.57.177.161 (talk) 07:40, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Well I would hope you didn't. That isn't alleged. He plead guilty. The CSAC case was the opposite. He was proven innocent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.132.217.21 (talk) 23:24, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Unsigned is correct. Wikipedia is not the place for your personal feelings. If you feel that strongly you should tell it to a Kleenex box. Propagandizing is not appreciated. Middleweight Championship Bout

Minor edit here; I'm removing a line with inaccurate information. The article currently states "Sonnen largely out-boxed Silva, the widely regarded 'best striker' in MMA." The cited source does not say anything about boxing, or about Silva being the "best striker in MMA." For reference, the source is http://www.compustrike.com/stats.php?news=CompuStrike_Stats:_UFC_117&news_id=151&start=0&category_id=5&parent_id=5&arcyear=Y&arcmonth=M 199.30.197.148 (talk) 15:15, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

I'm removing a line with inaccurate information as well. The article states that "Chael took Anderson down in all 5 rounds", but Chael only landed 3 of his 7 takedown attempts according to fightmetric. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.45.99.215 (talk) 16:57, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

"Silva became the third man in the UFC's history to finish a fight in the fifth round and the second via submission." is this really true. only 2 other fighters have ever finished a fight in the fifth round and only one other has done it via submission? no source is cited. 75.119.245.192 (talk) 11:57, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

Retired?

Can someone please tell me where they got that Chael Sonnen is retired. If anything that has to be far from the truth as his reapply date for a licence with the CSAC has been moved up.JM  00:28, 20 May (UTC)

Redundancy

The parts at the top, under his name, that talk about the TRT issue and the mortgage fraud issue should be removed as both have their own sections. The entire article reads like it was written by someone who hates Sonnen (I'm guessing Mr. JM because the discussion section is rife with his blatant bias and hatred) anyway so why pile it on...

Mortgage Fraud

Presently the title of this section is "Mortgage Fraud Controversy". It would be a more meaningful subject header if changed to "Mortgage Fraud Conviction". I think the word 'controversy' connotes 'debate' or 'dispute', suggesting there are two sides to the issue. LSDave (talk) 20:20, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Chael Defeated Renato 'Babalu' Sobral in 2003

It was in 2003 at the "Hitman Fighting Championship 3" event. He won by decision. So stop deleting it from his record, please. Can we possibly get some editors here without an anti-Chael agenda, that won't bury or outright delete accurate information? This is a Wikipedia page, not an outlet for you to express your frustrations.

It's not in Sherdog. Reference? Materialscientist (talk) 00:26, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Sherdog isn't the end all be all. The last I recall, Sherdog didn't include one of Royce Gracie's early losses. The one where his corner threw in the towel and it was officially declared a loss. But, for the record, it's listed on Chael's MixedMartialArts.com page.67.191.229.183 (talk) 04:23, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

This is a problem, because Sherdog is a top authority, and your link, while adding the 2003 win against Sobral, gives the total count as 25-11-1 (while it should then be 27-11-1). I would contact Sherdog asking to update their table. Materialscientist (talk) 04:50, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

You need to look at it again. Those two "missing" fights were amateur bouts. MixedMartialArts.com has two separate lists -- professional and amateur -- and being that those two were amateur bouts, they're listed on the amateur list, which is located beneath the professional. You can check it yourself. So, here's another example of Wikipedia editors and Sherdog getting their facts wrong. Also, MixedMartialArts IS a top authority, hence most professional fighters frequent their community forum.67.191.229.183 (talk) 01:37, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Please bring this issue to WT:MMA. To be consistent, changes will have to affect a wide range of articles (the issue of Sherdog being unreliable and treating bouts differently from MixedMartialArts in terms of professional/amateur). Materialscientist (talk) 01:51, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

I'll do that, but if MixedMartialArts.com isn't a top authority, like you implied, then why is it included as one of Chael's Wikipedia "References"? And take a look at this -- from Full Contact Fighting Federation's official Facebook page: "The "Full Contact Fighting Federation" is the nation's premier amateur, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event." - facebook.com/fullcontactfightingfederation. Yes, that says AMATEUR. His match with Greg Curnut was for Full Contact Fighting Federation, which proves it was in fact an amateur bout. Sherdog and you are wrong.67.191.229.183 (talk) 03:26, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

As Materialscientist said, Sherdog is the defacto standard for fight histories as far as the MMA Wikiproject has been concerned; issues with that should be taken up there. As for the 2003 event that had Sonnen facing Sobral I've found a couple mentions of the fight[1][2] and it possibly shows why Sherdog doesn't count the event. The event occurred before MMA was sanctioned in California, therefore the promoters billed the event as a professional wrestling event. So, Sherdog likely doesn't list it as it was not a "MMA fight" at a "MMA event". (The two sites I referenced go into more details about Sonnen being disclosed as the winner of the bout before it occurred and Sobral not being fully informed of the rules for the fight.) --TreyGeek (talk) 04:02, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

1. TreyGeek, you cited a random user's post on Sherdog's forum and a comment on another website as evidence. Those are far from credible sources. 2. I've already established the fact that Sherdog and Wikipedia falsely list amateur fights as professional fights. So Sherdog's failure to record an MMA fight could easily be the result of their own incompetence rather than reason. 3. The name of the organization they fought for was Hitman FIGHTING Championship. An organizations name and what actually took place in the ring (MMA) would obviously trump what the event was supposedly billed as (and your sources are dubious as far as that's concerned.) 67.191.229.183 (talk) 04:43, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Where are they getting their info from? c.m1994 (talking) 20:48 17 January 2012 (UTC)

No one knows. A random Sherdog forum member and a commenter on a relatively unknown MMA website. They could've gotten their information anywhere, or simply made it up. Either way, it shouldn't be accepted as evidence, and I'm pretty sure it's a violation of Wikipedia's rules to do so, anyways. There is no legitimate reason not to include his win over Sobral.67.191.229.183 (talk) 00:40, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

At no time was I attempting to use the two links as a reliable source to use in the article. I was simply using them as possible explanations as to why Sherdog does not include the event in their database. I think C.m1994's question is where does MixedMartialArts.com get their information from. After all, they state the match was a non-sanctioned fight; therefore there is no sanctioning body to go to for accurate information. How does MixedMartialArts.com know the bout was an MMA fight at an MMA event? Especially where there is no other coverage of this event that I can find.
Bottom line, thus far only one person is advocating using the record as stated at MixedMartialArts.com. Multiple people (at least two) advocate for using Sherdog's results. A post about this discussion was placed on the MMA WikiProject's talk page several days ago. If anyone else was interested in taking the side for not using Sherdog, I would image they would have done so. --TreyGeek (talk) 00:50, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

That is not how it was phrased. You said, and I quote, "the event occurred" and proceeded to regurgitate what a forum poster said as fact. Everything you said after "the event occurred" relies on a forum user and a commenter's dubious account of the event. Even if true, it doesn't warrant hiding the existence of this MMA fight. MixedMartialArts.com lists MANY of Sonnen's fights as non-sanctioned, and all but one of those, the Sobral fight, is listed here. So that's kind of irrelevant. Hitman FIGHTING (emphasis on fighting) promoted the bout. The event itself featured Chael Sonnen, Chris Leben, Sobral, and Shannon Ritch, among other noted MMA fighters. MixedMartialArts.com recorded submission, decision, and TKO wins at this event. What else would it be? Sonnen acknowledges it happened, Rogan referenced it on air, live, and Sobral doesn't dispute the fact that a fight took place, either, as far as I know -- he just claims he wasn't fully aware of the rules. Ignorance of the rules doesn't change the results of the fight (see: Anderson Silva vs. Okami 1). If you're not willing to add it to his fight record, then you should at least mention it somewhere in the article itself.67.191.229.183 (talk) 02:28, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

I for one am with adding it to the fight record, as long as their is proof that the fight did infact happen, just because Rogan said the fight happened doesn't mean it did, he could have been hyping Sonnen. If Sonnen said the fight happen how can we trust him? Look at Miguel Angel Torres. Sorry but I am not convicened yet. c.m1994 (did I do something wrong?) 1:04 19 January 2012 (UTC)

NJCAA

I am not convinced the NJCAA info listed for Chael is correct so I removed it until it can be further verified. First, the link provided says he was "a two-time junior national finalist in Greco-Roman." I don't think "junior" in that context means junior college, but instead means junior as in below senior (e.g., junior nationals for high school wrestlers and senior nationals for adults). Second, the school the wikipedia page listed was "University of Oregon", clearly not a school that competes within the NJCAA. Also, the year was listed with a question mark. Without knowing the school or year, I don't think enough is known to list it on his page. Third, I have tried my own searching to find a reference to his NJCAA career and have not found anything that does not appear to be a republication of this wikipedia article. Based on all this, I removed his NJCAA career information until better reference(s) can be provided. RonSigPi (talk) 14:32, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Neutrality

I'm finding the comments regarding Silva/Sonnen II completely lack neutrality. It seems to establish that he should have lost the fight when he in fact won. There's a quote from his manager that seems completely pointless beyond an excuse for Chael to try to get another rematch, with there being zero reason to quote this as Chael and/or his manager complaining after a fight is rather par for the course. Reading the article one would believe Chael should have won this fight. He lost. Smokachu (talk) 21:06, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

we have all heard fighters say "anywhere anytime im ready to fight" but more time than not there not really welling to back that up. well on aug23 2012 chael was given the chance to prove it when Dan Henderson hurt his knee training for hes sep1 fight with Jon Jones. even with this fight coming right after the fight chael had anderson silva. the only problem was jon jones was not well to fight chael "always ready to fight" sonnen. sonnen wasnt the first fighter that ucf pres. dana white asked but was the only one willing to fight jones. in fact when the call was made to sonnen about the fight not only did he say yes he told dana that not only will he fight him if he needs to he will get on a plane now and fight him tonight. so without a dout this proves the chael means it when he say anywhere anytime and at least in the case of jon jones he dosent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richdavis23 (talkcontribs) 18:39, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Not done for now: He doesn't yet. The LHW match is scheduled for December 29. He and/or Griffin might not make weight, or either or both may pull out out of the fight for any reason. Until he actually weighs in and fights at LHW, it would be inaccurate to say he (currently) competes as a light heavyweight. The most recent reliable source for his weight in the infobox is the pre-Silva weigh-in; it would be confusing to readers to see a 185.5 lb guy described as a light heavyweight. The scheduled LHW fight is adequately mentioned in its own section. InedibleHulk (talk) 05:09, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Technical decision clarification.

I noticed someone added that Jones' toe injury put him at risk for a technical decision loss. This is sourced, but there are a few problems with the claim.

According to the Unified Rules of MMA, 13:46-24A.16 "Injuries sustained during competition", a technical decision is only for injuries resulting from fouls, and only after three rounds of a five-round fight (or two of a three-rounder) have passed. Even if they were allowed for regular injuries, and after one round, Jones would have undoubtedly been ahead on points.

The relevant rule is the first, "If an injury sustained during competition as a result of a legal maneuver is severe enough to terminate a bout, the injured contestant loses by technical knockout." Like Medeiros and his thumb, earier.

Just something to consider, in case someone else runs across this "fact". InedibleHulk (talk) 17:28, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Steroids

The page states that Sonnen tested positive for steroids. That is 100% inaccurate and false information that should be corrected seen before everyone thinks its true. His test results had nothing to do with steroids, it was testosterone, and the reason he was suspended was not due to high testosterone levels. It was due to low epitestosterone. This caused the T/E balance to be too great of a difference, according to the athletic commission. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.201.121.176 (talk) 07:00, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

This is an article about Chael Sonnen, not by him or in any way connected. He'll likely never read this. If you'd like to fight him, try Twitter. Or train hard and join UFC. InedibleHulk (talk) 21:34, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Sonnen is not Olympic alternate?

National Teams Director for USA Wrestling Mitch Hull clarified that there is no official term Olympic alternate, only Olympic Team Trials Runner-up. Chael Sonnen however is not runner-up either, since he placed fourth in Olympic Team Trials. Please change to Olympic hopeful, Olympic candidate, Olympic trials participant or other appropriate term. http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2013/8/19/4636458/no-ufc-chael-sonnen-is-not-an-olympic-alternate-2000-trials-greco-roman-wrestling — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.237.151.212 (talk) 23:45, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Fair enough. I've labeled him a 2-time Olympic trialist. Sound good? InedibleHulk (talk) 00:21, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
Wait, no. 1-time. My bad. Confused Olympic with World. InedibleHulk (talk) 00:23, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll try to check out other athletes who have this term in their articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.237.151.212 (talk) 02:52, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

No half brother

I have spent a lot of time with Chael Sonnen and in talking directly with Chael Sonnen he informed me had no half brother and I request the section where it says he has a half brother to be amended so that it is correct. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jbossman (talkcontribs) 15:49, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Chael Sonnen did not turn states evidence

After agreeing to testify against others involved in the investigation,[74] - That was only a story in the magazine. Chael never testified against anyone and in no way shape or form did he ever work with the state. Please take this out as the news article was incorrect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jbossman (talkcontribs) 15:52, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
