Metal vs. non-metal debate edit

The article was very confusing with contiguous sentences claiming that metal should not be used and that metal was okay. The inline citations for metal being okay were nowhere near the claim (presumably they were pushed out by subsequent edits). I revised the entire paragraph, included both sides with citations and added a clarifying third point, also with a source.

I also removed two statements:

Mother of pearl is ideal for serving caviar because, unlike sterling silver or stainless steel, it does not affect caviar's fragile flavor. Mother of pearl is chemically inert, which means it cannot transfer any unpleasant flavors to the caviar.

This may be true, but the inline citation for it led to a website that sells mother of pearl caviar spoons. So not NPOV. To wit, plastic spoons are also non-reactive...

Mother of pearl is typically harvested from the intertidal zone to depths of about 200 feet primarily from coastal waters along
the southern tip and Western Cape region of South Africa, South Pacific islands, and the Philippines.

Also perhaps true, but what does it have to do with caviar spoons? This information belongs in the nacre article, if anywhere. Richigi (talk) 20:54, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Article Clarity and Integrity edit

The edits I made pertaining to the above concerns (see Metal vs. Non-Metal) were reverted without subsequently addressing the concerns, either here on Talk or in the article. I toddled over to the editor's talk page and asked him if he had read my concerns here. He generously admitted that he had not and he subsequently made changes to the article. Unfortunately, the issues I'd outlined remained unaddressed. I'll restate them in different way, just in case:

  • The first paragraph is confusing and ill-written. It contains conflicting statements without reconciling them.
  • All the inline citations belonging to the first paragraph appear at the end of the second paragraph.
  • Two of the references link to a commercial website that sells mother of pearl caviar spoons, a source that is neither reliable nor objective.
  • The second paragraph about harvesting mother of pearl has not been demonstrated to be pertinent to this article.

I would like to see these issues addressed; I'm happy to do it myself (in fact, I have), but if someone else wishes to do so, that's also awesome! Since the first major overhaul was reverted, I'll assume that there's immediate interest in how this article is revised and edit in smaller chunks to allow for discussion of each point. For starters, I'll just place the inline citations correctly. Richigi (talk) 01:25, 16 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Okay, inline cites placed correctly (I think), and one of them that did not appear to be a reference for anything was moved to a new External Links section. One more thing, I'll be adding an unref tag to the Manufacturing section. Richigi (talk) 01:39, 16 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the knife edit

A free picture of the knife would be very nice. Викидим (talk) 22:27, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
