Destruction of the Dominican church in WW2. edit

During World War II, the Dominican Cathedral - the same as the whole city - was severely destroyed.

According to handwritten witness statements made by former residents of Ternopil, two of which I have translated (of which there are thousands held in the Hoover Institution) this church was burnt down by the Red Army about a week after they entered Ternopil on the 17th September 1939. The fire would have been set approximately 22nd September. It burnt for a week as the Soviets did not permit the Polish fire brigade to put out the fire. This was probably done deliberately as part of the Soviet policy of the propagation of atheism.
