Talk:Cathedral of Saint Domnius

Oldest cathedral edit

The "oldest cathedral in the world", no matter how you cut it, is the Etchmiadzin Cathedral. And at the time of its construction there were no divisions along the lines of Catholicism/Eastern Christianity (or even at the time of Saint Domnius' consecration).

I've not found non-Croatian sources that echo the "oldest Cathedral" claims. However, I've also not been able to find a Catholic cathedral older than this one that remains in use to this day in its original structure, without large-scale renovation/rebuilding. The Cathedrals of Rome and Trier are older, but have been nearly completely rebuilt at a much later date.

At the very least, the "oldest Cathedral in the world" claim needs to be qualified in terms of "oldest Catholic cathedral, that's still in use today, in its original building". However, in terms of the actual structure used by the cathedral, Domnius is only a few years younger than Etchmiadzin. Though the building (Diocletian's Mausoleum) was consecrated as a cathedral some four hundred years after it was built. -- Director (talk) 20:27, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Split cathedral is the oldst Roman Catholic cathedral in the world still in usage. Walter9 (talk) 10:58, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

New title edit

I propose that we rename this article into Split Cathedral because articles about all Croatian cathedrals have that type of title. E.g. Sisak Cathedral, Zagreb Cathedral, Bjelovar Cathedral, Krk Cathedral, Zadar Cathedral etc.

False name edit

The name of cathedral is false. Citizens of Split traditionally calls it "Cathedral of Saint Domnius" according to a patron of the city, but officialy it is Cathedral of Ascension of Blessed Virgin Mary. That should be corrected. Walter9 (talk) 19:58, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Six years has passed and there is still a false title of the article. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the name of Split cathedral. Walter9 (talk) 11:00, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
