She become involved in a major controversy in 2005 when it was revealed that she was having an affair with Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe. The raised concerns about a conflict of interest because she was also covering the Dodgers as a reporter for the regional Fox sports network Fox Sports Net West. The scandal was compounded by the fact that both Lowe and Hughes were married at the time. Fox responded to the revelation by removing Hughes from her duties on regional FSN West, but indicated she would be allowed to continue hosting the FSN Across America, which was not regional-specific, but aired nationwide across all of the FSN networks. However, that show was ultimately discontinued. Hughes' husband indicated to the media that he had filed for divorce from Hughes. Lowe soon filed for divorce from his wife.
As of late 2005, Hughes' professional status was still in limbo, with her not having been officially fired nor suspended by Fox, but also not having any specific visible duties for the network.
Since that time, Hughes and Lowe have moved in together. [1]
