Recommendation

Something that isn't on the article is that Santana was violated by a man when he was living alone in Tijuana (his family was in San Francisco at the time) and that really affected him psychologically making him the man he is nowdays. For he has had many problems hes gone to therapies etc. to repair the damage that part of his life did to him.

I read something like that too, I think it was an interview-article in Rolling Stone from the late 90ies. Whichever mag, I probably threw it away. Maybe it might help someone who archives these things... As far as I remember, C. S. stated that his spirituality only really emerged in the aftermath and that together with the music it was like therapy for him. Confirmation: A Rolling Stone article posted on their web site, entitled "Carlos' Cosmic Bummer," discusses his molestation in the 6th paragraph on page 3. This web posting is a preview of the print article forthcoming in the October 18, 2008 edition. That 'graph also notes that the incident was reported in Rolling Stone nine years earlier. I also remember hearing him unexpectedly reveal this during a television interview several years ago. I regret that I cannot recall the program, but the RS articles should be sufficient verification. Article expansion

I've expanded the article significantly, including pulling over material that WikiDon wrote in the Journey article that was more relevant here. But the long stretch between Love Devotion Surrender and Supernatural is still very open; somebody else with more knowledge of that period needs to fill it in. Ethnic Backround

Can someone expand on Carlos's ethnic backround, from what i've heard he has some eastern european lineage in him. If anything it would be from Spain (western) and the Middle East (east and south of spain)

I've taken out "bongos" from the "Percussion" heading. It's unnecessary, and besides, the bongos are secondary to any percussionist's gear. It's also worth noting that in "The Best of Santana" in the liner notes, they only refer to these musicians as playing "percussion", not "bongos". I think whoever put this in the title did so because of the common error of referring to "congas" as "bongos". Derekwriter 04:10, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

There really needs to be some mention of Graham Lear, Santana's drummer who was with him at least through Moonflower, and can be seen as a very young kid in the Woodstock footage.

Micheal Shrieve was the bands drummer at Woodstock. Lear didn't join the band until around 1977.

Hats and partial baldness

What is with the hats in the last ten years (late 90s, early 00s)? He has never appeared without a hat, even when performing indoors. Has he developed pattern baldness?

Good catch. There has been some recent vandalism on this article. Like many of 828 articles I watch, I try to protect this article as best I can. Sometimes stuff slips through and the vandals get a momentary win. I cannot read thoroughly each article but depend on readers like you who can point out errors to me that can be fixed. Thank you! Greatest guitarists

Well, if there is a reputable source to cite, I guess. But it sounds odd to me, after all, Kim Jong Ill says he has written 50 grand operas and is the greatest military strategist since... well ever. Guitar used on Supernatural

Please do not revert this part back to the les paul. He does not play the les paul, and never has. He used the PRS Santana guitar on the supernatural album. The unofficial recordings section was updated ages ago by me to include the official Santana management stance on these dubious recordings. Evidently these are being viewed as official releases as someone is preventing the removal of these from the discography section. Why are these gray area releases being promoted here?

Thanks for taking this to the talk page. From what I can see, these albums are not being viewed as "official" releases (hence the "Unofficial Releases" header), nor are they being promoted by their inclusion. Wikipedia regularly has articles on B-sides and bootleg tracks, and there's no reason to exclude them as long as their existence and notability is backed up by reliable sources. --jonny-mt 06:55, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Controversy?

1980s

In the 1980s section, the 1982 single "Hold On" was mentioned, but no mention was made of the album Shango, where that song can be found. Furthermore, no mention throughout was made of Santana's unambiguous references to the Santeria religion within the context of Shango (specifically, the "Oxun (Oshun)" and "Shangó" tracks, and the album cover art). Current Record Label

The RCA Music Group did a lot of restructuring. They closed down Arista, J Records & Jive. It looks like the RCA website has been somewhat adjusted. On the list of artists, Santana does not show up. Sly's Fillipina

The comment below originally appeared in 2010AD. The Neandathal who omitted cited it as "Unsourced" twice. As I've said, this is in the public record.

I'm a little confused, which is nothing when one tries to get their information off wikipedia.com As I remember, Sly Stone married this strikingly tall fillipina woman in 1971 or '72 in a raucus wedding held at Madison Square Garden to paying fans. On reading the Wiki history on both Santana and Sly, a female memeber of the " ...Family Stones" appears as the former wife of Sly and current wife of Santana! Her name is DEBORAH KING (SANTANA). Now this is r-e-a-l-l-y confusing, as the image of Deborah and this Fillipina woman (who at the time was sooo stateques she could've blown ALL of the 70s sick-figure models outta the water. This woman appears in Sly's album "SMALL TALK", her and him holding their toddler son.

Now if the Fillipina IS NOT Deborah King, then who is she, what is the relation between these two women to Sly, and why is there no info on this?

Also omitted from Wiki is the fact that while Sly was hospitalized shortly after his honeymoon to this asian woman, she bullied the the hospital staff into accomodating her demands to share a room with her husband by having a bed right next his. This reference I remember from Jet Magazines, which chronicled many exploits of black public public figures that usually were not covered in the "main-stream" press. Lucky them to be living in those times!

I like to get some feed-back on these matters, particulay Sly's wives, and this Madison Square garden thing, the latter not getting the kind of iconic reporting that lesser Rock stars get.

Much is omitted in recent, post modern history of pop culture. With black luminaries it's like classic NAZI disinformation and black-out.

What nationality?

Can someone supply proof that Santana's official Nationality is Mexican OR American? In the USA, for people with one parent having American citizenship and the other having citizenship in another country, upon turning 18 years of age, we were told that the United States no longer accepted dual citizenship and that we had to choose which one as adults. Israel was the one exception if the person is Jewish. Thus, in the USA I am American, but in Brazil I hold dual citizenship. His official citizenship is whatever the US government and the Mexican government separately say it is. He was born in Mexico and became a US citizen by naturalization at age 18. That much is shown by article content. According to Mexican nationality law he didn't lose his Mexican citizenship on becoming naturalized in the US so he is still a Mexican citizen. He is also a US citizen by naturalization. So he is both by the laws of each country. According to "US State Department Services Dual Nationality" the US has no problems with dual nationality and apparently neither does Mexico.

However, according to WP:OPENPARA, the lede should mention only the country of citizenship of a person when they became notable. Since Santana has resided in the US since he was 18 and all his notable accomplishment were as a US resident, only his American citizenship need be mentioned in the lede and he can be considered an American musician. In past versions of the article he was listed as either a Mexican musician or an American musician and people kept changing between the two. Keeping both in the lede is an attempt at a compromise and it IS factually correct. Geraldo Perez (talk) 16:44, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Geraldo, the fact that he became a U.S. citizen does not mean that he gave up his Mexican citizenship. Country of residence is irrelevant. He did not stop being Mexican because he became a U.S. citizen. His Mexican citizenship is not relevent to his notable achievements. Also Mexican American as described in that article just means Americans of Mexican descent. I originally had Mexican and American, which is what you are trying to say, but that didn't stick either. Santana used the Gibson solid-body L6-s

Around 1975 (pre-PRS) Santana used the solid-body Gibson L6-S, and endorsed it in Gibson ads as his "rainbow." Designed by the late Bill Lawrence, the original L6-S had a rotary switch which provided all possible ways of wiring two pickups including the unusual out of phase series and out of phase parallel wirings (the reissue L6-S substituted various single-coil wirings of the individual pickups).

Bad choice for the infobox. I strongly feel for biographies of musicians that there should be both a clear view of the performer's face with their primary instrument whenever possible. Just because we have a lot of pics doesn't mean ours have to be on top, or cramming all of them into an article (sorry... went off on that because now that D.C.has legalized recreational weed my brother seems intent on blasting music and denying me some sleep)! Putting in both Mexican and American nationalities in the intro sentence was a compromise because editors kept switching between the two. By the strict reading of WP:OPENPARA he is an American musician as all his notable activities occurred after he was naturalized as an American and his Mexican nationality was not a factor in this. Acknowledge Mexican Nationality and Ethnicity

This is a new section in which we review the need to acknowledge Mexican nationality for a Mexican musician. This would normally be reflexive for an African American musician, but for Mexicans there seems to be quite a hesitation to assert to close a tie to Mexico. Perhaps, the current political climate is to blame? At any rate, this comment is to inform users that Carlos Santana should be referenced as Mexican since he was born there, lived there for years and is actually described as a Mexican guitarrist in the Mexican press and by fans colloquially. First of all, please consider the previous discussions in the archives. It will demonstrate that a consensus was reached. Secondly nobody is denying his Mexican ancestry. It is mentioned throughout the article. It would be very strange not to. The issue is, as was highlighted before that he became a US citizen at the age of 18 and much of his notability occurred after this. That complies with MOS:OPENPARA I would like to see an example of an African American musician who is referred to as such in the WP:LEDE. @N0n3up: It has nothing to do with being politically correct, but with avoiding further reverts. And this has been an issue in the past. By using Mexican-American it will be interpreted as pointing to his ethnicity. That means that other editors unaware of the previous discussions will feel the need to revert to either Mexican or American under MOS:OPENPARA. As happened yesterday. Personally I have no preference for either (I'm from the UK), but a clear consensus, perhaps through RfC should be reached here to avoid future conflicts. Karst (talk) 06:58, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

He is a dual national based on birth and naturalization. Not really contentious for that part. Generally only put nationality where achieved notability in lead but both being acknowledged seems a reasonable compromise that has worked for many years. As before, Mexican American and Mexican-American are ethnicity descriptors that make him a type of American, which while true, are descriptions of his ethnicity, and reduce in importance that he is also a Mexican national. Dual nationality

Irrelevant to the discussions above, I'm only concerned that the manner to describe his dual nationality is "Mexican and American" rather than "Mexican-American". Both terms seem to be grammatically connected either by "and" or a dash seems to not have any link to ethnicity and both can describe his dual nationality equally as efficient as the first. I'm only posting this since most biographic articles of living people seem to follow the first form of mentioning dual nationality rather than putting "and" between them. Mexican-American, per that article, is an ethnicity defined there as "are Americans of full or partial Mexican descent". We don't put ethnicities in the context part of the intro per WP:BLPLEAD and defining him as Mexican-American effectively drops the fact that he is also a Mexican national which the and between the nationalities makes unambiguously clear and gives equal weights to both his nationalities. Also discussion at #Acknowledge Mexican Nationality and Ethnicity highlight the importance people place on his being Mexican and a descriptor generally used in the US for all Americans with any sort of Mexican ancestry no matter how distant completely removes that. Biography?

Why is there a heading called "Biography?" The whole article is a biography. Wouldn't it be better just to jump right in with the headings "Early life" and "Early career" etc... If there are no objections, I will change this in the future.

Suspect error in Early Career section

Awards and nominations

Carlos Santana has won multiple awards, not just Grammys. List of awards and nominations received by Santana includes a list of Carlos Santana's accolades, but since the list is supposed to be about accolades received by the band Santana, the awards received solely in Carlos Santana's name could be moved to the Awards and nominations section, which currently includes Santana band Grammys. I am not sure Carlos Santana knows what was given to him by Jerry Garcia. His 2014 autobiography says mescaline. In his 2019 Youtube interview linked farther down he says acid.
