What defines Caribbean literature?

It appears to me that an important part of Caribbean literature has not been included on this page: the literature of the French West Indies. Is this merely an oversight? Or is there a reason FWindian authors are not among those listed?

As a temporary measure, I will add a link (in the See Also section) to the Guadeloupe page, which includes a number of important authors from this region not yet listed here.

Agreed, this is (still) a very Anglophone-centric description of Caribbean literature. Seems likely to need some serious rewriting. Primer42 (talk) 12:50, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

I would also agree that the geopolitical definitions and linguistic representation need further improvement. And, I would also like to add to this discussion that there is also the issue of what defines literature playing out in the article. Is all writing literature? In general, literature is considered to be artistic works in some form, whereas writing includes all writings, including the academic non-fiction discipline, st. Is it worth considering splitting the article into a more general article on Caribbean writing/authors and keeping this page reserved for artistic works (or authors that cross both disciplines)? Was just wondering if this was a course on "English literature". "American literature", "Australian literature", etc, would the inclusion of books on politics, history, or even book about literature but not literature itself would be included? Or is it better to just have it in a single article to make it easier for our viewership to read/search? There seems to me to be a few things worth sorting out in how "Caribbean literature" may be best defined here. KnowTheManyHistories (talk) 08:36, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Correction: I guess there is a page titled "Caribbean writers". But, I am still curious about where the line may be considered in including authorship on the literature page. KnowTheManyHistories (talk) 08:41, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Also, I was wondering on what the best way of presenting authors who have a heritage in the Caribbean vs. those who emigrated elsewhere and are thus part of the Caribbean diaspora vs. people still living and residing in the Caribbean. It seems that as this history is relevant to the lived experience of the author, and for some they may not even be citizens of the Caribbean countries in which they were born, this probably is a relevant distinction to make as well. West Indian Literature?

Why does the description of West Indian countries include only the smaller islands, and the the list of West Indian writers also includes Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Guayana? --Naddruf (talk) 17:40, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

Titles by Country or Region?

I was wondering if it is worth considering editing the sections organizing authors to be based on geopolitical boundaries or remain in places only. For example, the Virgin Islands encompasses the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the Spanish Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico where two are primarily English-speaking and the other two are primarily Spanish-speaking, thus affecting the primary language of the authors as well as other nuances in local governance that could have an influence on the author's perspective. It's just a thought, but I believe it may improve the content to be more representative of local definitions. Your time and thoughts are much appreciated, thanks for reading!
