College Yell

I have no idea about the "College Yell" mentioned at the bottom; I studied at Cardiff for four years and never heard this. It sounds made up; "Bantahie! Bantahie!" doesn't sound Welsh, and the only Google hits for it are mirrors of this article. I think it's spurious.

It was from the Cardiff University graduation booklet for 2002. -- Robminchin 05:25, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Established 1883

If "Cardiff University" was not established until the merger of the University of Wales, Cardiff and the University of Wales College of Medicine surely it was established in 2004. I realise it has its roots in the original institution but most other universities have the actual date when they were established with a reference to past institutions that they evolved from. University ratings

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. References and retrieval dates for each should be included if these are to be trusted. 131.251.124.206 (talk) 09:26, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Suggest that Academic ranking of the World's Universities becomes Times Higher Education ranking of the World's Universities as the primary source for these rankings are the THES rankings. 82.15.22.156 (talk) 23:36, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

All other ranking entries on this page are currently labelled 2009. As no originating reference was provided when they were added to the page I suggest either removing the year from the title or attempting to verify the information provided 82.15.22.156 (talk) 23:38, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Error in student population figures

I quote "The student population is diverse with 17% of students from overseas and 85% of students from state schools."

How can the total population be more than 100%? (in this case, 102%?) Lowjoel 05:19, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Because they can come form a state school in another country?

Yeah, all it means is that 83% are not from overseas and that 15% are not from state schools. You can be interntaional and have attended a state school or be a home student from a private, grammar or public school; they are not mutually exclusive.--Lucan 14 (talk) 14:07, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Photography Competition

I've reinstated this twice now as I believe it to be verifiable. If the Person or persons who continue to delete the text do not give valid reasons then I shall continue to reinstate the text. Please discuss here your reasons for deletion.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Greenwold2008 (talkcontribs) 18:47, 3 January 2009

It's verifiable, but is it notable and its inclusion proportionate? Cardiff's 125th Anniversary is a very small part of the university's history, and the photo competition a very small part even of that. And Pro-imaging routinely assess photo comps for fairness and find them wanting. I'd remove the text here as undue weight. — mholland (talk) 05:05, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Is it notable. Considering that throughout the year there was a large calendar of events this is one small part of that celebration and perhaps the 125 celebration should be included and beefed up. However, do we let them off the hook by not exposing this copyright crime? Am I being a bit strong maybe however, this article is not as negative as other universities in the UK are. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Greenwold2008 (talkcontribs) 14:08, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

No, I don't think we do let them off the hook. There is no hook. No crime has been committed, and many other art competitions are similarly greedy when it comes to levering rights from artists.
Peppering an article with random sprinkles of negativity does not make it balanced or neutral. This factoid is genuinely a random particle, with little bearing on this article about a university. If Cardiff had been found claiming excessive rights over research discoveries, or republishing PhD theses without students' permission, then that would be something to include. This was a minor photo competition. — mholland (talk) 17:18, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi - I don't know how to get a Wikipedia account so I just clicked 'Edit'. I go to Cardiff University and I think it is ridiculous that such a large part of this Wikipedia article should be bent towards the spiteful agenda of an organisation, especially considering the very small audience the information about 'Pro Photographic' or whatever it was called is intended for. I have friends who entered that competition and they said they were treated really fairly, with creditation and how staff at the University have been in touch with them whenever they want to use a photo to ask about it. I agree totally with mholland. Also, how subjective a term discussed above is 'copyright crime'? This borders on libel anyway when discussing an organisation that maintains a reputation partly based on intellectual property, patents and research into facts and inventions. Surely if we're going to talk about subjective branding of terms like that, then Pro Photographic should be labelled as purveyor of 'irrelevant information for an extremely small minority of annoyed people that could have and should have abstained from a very small photo competition'. I don't understand what this trolling crusade is all about, and personally, I don't think 99.9% of the visitors to this page are interested either. On those grounds it should be removed. I can't believe the quality of this article could be defaced by a group with such a biased agenda - anyway, not doing a great job of summarising this properly, but mholland and others who are unbiased out there in wiki world - thanks for contributing. Nineteenth Century Cardiff Students

My external link to student lists was edited out. My fault - I jumped the gun. I'd altered the student lists page to include a reference to Cardiff but it hadn't gone live. I should have waited. It has now.

http://www.shl.lon.ac.uk/specialcollections/archives/studentrecords.shtml

I re-checked the number of University College Cardiff students in the 1901 list. There are at least 400 (I used the acronym "Univ Coll. Cardiff) so I think they are a useful link to anyone interested in Cardiff's history. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Richard temple (talkcontribs) 12:31, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

The "external links" section is not a repository for any links we think "might be useful". Lists of students from over 100 years ago are not encyclopaedic. – PeeJay 12:09, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Too many pictures

I think the page now has too many images, compared to the amount of text leaving it looking crowded and unbalanced, Especially as some duplicate images already on the page, such as the Bute Building (2 images) and the main builing (4 images).

I think these should be removed until more text can be provided.Xyphoid (talk) 00:55, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Alumni

What allowance has been made for Wales graduates in the new charter? The alumni listed on this page are all University of Wales graduates, of course, not Cardiff graduates - will they be allowed the same benefits? Are they even technically Cardiff graduates? Anyone?

- I would say generally an organisation retains it's alumni through name changes and the such, and even though they have been given different degrees, as you can consider University College Cardiff and Cardiff University the same organisation, you can consider thier alumni to be the same as wellXyphoid (talk) 00:27, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

I've removed the following names from the Alumni list:

If anyone feels they warrant being reinstated, please give a reason. After searching on Wikipedia and on Google I could find no good reason why they warrant being listed here. Fakelvis 16:56, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Universities central at Women in Red on IWD during March 2017

Info and invitation. Women in Red has a drive during March to create and improve articles on women alumni of universities. International Women's Day is on March 8th and we invite others to mirror the event in the UK in Cambridge. Please sign up or ask for help at Women in Red. Hope you can make it. We have tools that will allow you to find missing women alumni from Cardiff university. We are interested in editors who want to work in any language.
