Biofuels vs fossil fuels edit

Hi -- I'm not sure whether this article is going to be a "keeper" -- if so, it will need inline sources -- but in any case it makes one statement that is definitely wrong: "the distinction between biofuels and fossil fuels is irrelevant because both contribute more or less equally to the production of atmospheric carbon dioxide". The big difference is that the carbon in biofuels comes from CO2 in the air, whereas the carbon in fossil fuels comes from underground. So for biofuels, it's all a big cycle, air->plant->fuel->air, with no net addition of carbon. looie496 (talk) 05:58, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Excellent point, thanks, let me fix that. Incidentally what you say is closer to the truth in the case of "wild" biofuels (modulo processing), but for "farmed" biofuels such as ethanol from corn one must count the carbon released during the farming, e.g. from tractors, manufacture of fertilizer, etc., which by some accounts throws off the claim of "no net addition of carbon" to a considerable degree. If you have a clear picture of these overheads you should be writing this article, not me. (I'm embarrassed at flipping my lid at Noian, usually I manage to stay on a more even keel.)

Not sure what inline sources are needed here. The problem with the fossil fuel and biofuel articles is that neither one is the logical focus for carbon-based fuel. However since essentially all carbon-based fuels are covered by these articles, it's hard to see what inline sources to add besides links to these articles, which by themselves are fine. Basically all that the present article should do is make the point that these are the two kinds of carbon-based fuels, and compare them from a couple of perspectives that might not be so clear from the separate articles on the two. I guess the latter is where I need sources, let me dig some up. --Vaughan Pratt (talk) 06:28, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good points -- and I'm definitely not the one who should be writing this article. Regarding sources, Wikipedia articles are supposed to stand alone in that respect, because there is never any guarantee about what will happen to other articles. It's perfectly okay to duplicate references from other articles if you need them for assertions you make here -- though you should verify them if you do. looie496 (talk) 06:54, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
