Route Maps edit

The established guideline is quite clear in that images should be thumb-sized. Besides, all destinations served are already listed in the tables, so adding a map is effectively redundant information (albeit pretty-looking). I honestly see no reason for the image to be sized any larger than the standard thumb.

Xhosa translation of the name edit

Does anyone know what the airport is called in Xhosa? It would probably be appropriate to have the Xhosa name along with the Afrikaans. - htonl (talk) 09:12, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

But do we really want to list the name of every South African article in all 11 Official South African languages? I don't even think Afrikaans should be there, there is an initerwiki link to the af version for those than want to know what the Afrikaans name is. --NJR_ZA (talk) 10:50, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be a Wikipedia policy on this question. The only possibly relevant ones seem to be Wikipedia:Lead section#Alternative names and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names). The former says that "Relevant foreign language names, such as in an article on a person who does not herself write her name in English, are encouraged." while the latter (applying, of course, only to geographic names) says "Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted and should be listed...".
So I suppose it's fair to say that, except for cases where a non-English name is specifically relevant (say, for example, the Afrikaans Language Monument), and geographical names where there is a significant population of non-English speakers (i.e. virtually everywhere in South Africa!) we should list only the English name. So I'm going be WP:BOLD and edit this article accordingly. - htonl (talk) 11:59, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, the Singapore Changi Airport article has the airport's name in English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.
I think its perfectly acceptable to list at least the most common languages used in the country (or the region)
India has even more official languages than South Africa. For the Indian airports, English and the most common language(s) of the region/state are listed.
In the Western Cape, Afrikaans is by far the most commonly used language. Followed by Xhosa and English. Speakers of other languages are negligible. So why not use these three? There's no nees to list all eleven. Jasepl (talk) 12:35, 22 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Remove Hajj section edit

I'm strongly inclined to remove this section, my reasons being:

  • Suitable sources. Instead of tagging it as needing references, I decided to search Google for something I could use. I couldn't find any reliable sources out there.
  • Following on a bit from the previous point, I don't think that it's really notable enough to be included. If we let it stand, we set the dangerous precedent of creating new sections for every single special event out there.

My feeling is: remove the section entirely. I suppose that it may be worth a mention as a single paragraph in an existing section (assuming there is a reliable source out there that I haven't found yet), but nothing more. Also, flights can be temporarily added to "Airlines and destinations" when they operate, which surely is good enough. I'm not going to make this change without consensus though. • Yes please. It really adds no value to an encyclopaedic article. Besides, there are hundreds of airports that have Hajj charters. There's also no need to add an entry in the table, because they're not scheduled flights (ie: one can't simply buy a ticket on a Hajj flight as an ordinary passenger). A one-liner, akin to "Hajj charters also operate to Jeddah and Madinah" (or wherever), is more than sufficient. Jasepl (talk) 19:22, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've taken it out entirely. I was going to mention it in a sentence in Airlines and Destinations, but as I still can't find reliable sources, I can't really do that. Ron2K (talk) 07:27, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Article being compromised edit

The renaming of the Cape Town International Airport is a contentious issue at the moment. I corrected the naming to Cape Town International Airport as the status has not been legally changed. An unregistered user with the IP address of 197.215.163.54 is continuously altering the page with wrong information. Can an admin please semi-protect this page and ban the unregistered user. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cozinsky (talkcontribs) 10:26, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cozinsky I agree. I added the bit in February 2019 regarding the name change after noticing how often the name was changed, hoping to put the issue to rest. It didn't work. Wyatt Tyrone Smith (talk) 10:49, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
