Southernmost except for Cape Leeuwin edit

  Resolved

This sentence seems a bit verbose to me.

It is the first feature of the coast (when travelling north, or last if travelling south) that occurs along over 1,000 kilometres of named features by the French in their travels along the coast, after Cape Leeuwin.

Does it mean the same as, and would it be better worded as:

Except for Cape Leeuwin, it is the southernmost of over 1,000 kilometres of features named by the French in their travels along the coast.
