The original findings of Benbow and Stanley are strongly supported and deepened with substantial hard data and further analysis in the following article: "The Gender Gap in Secondary School Mathematics at High Achievement Levels: Evidence from the American Mathematics Competitions," Glenn Ellison and Ashley Swanson, Journal of Economic Perspectives, v. 24, n.2, Spring 2010, pp. 109-128. This paper does not cite Benbow and Stanley, nor does it mention the firestorm touched off by related comments by then Harvard President Lawrence Summers. The Benbow and Stanley AAAS paper plus Critique and Reply to Critique were found on 5/7/2011 with a GOOGLE search on the words "Benbow Stanley AAAS" colbert2422 [full disclosure: I have no economic interest in this controversy. Other commentators do not so state. I have followed this since the 1980 Benbow and Stanley publication in Science Magazine, the official publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.]
