Route 39 Freeway

Can anyone add more information on the planned but later scrapped Route 39 freeway? --Ultimate Roadgeek (talk) 04:24, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Hey Ultimate Roadgeek, the articles below (ordered chronologically) should be helpful in filling in the backstory regarding the section of CA SR 39 that fell into disrepair... Before I was even born, LOL!
I'm an avid motorcyclist who moved back to the area last year from Seattle. I would really love it if SR 39 connected with Hwy 2 as those are some of my favorite roads to ride and they would be far more accessible if interconnected.

39 will never reconnect to Angeles Crest Highway, at least not in the next 30 years. Also we have enough spray paint and vandalism and gangs at Crystal Lake as it is, we don't need another avenue for Los Angeles shitters to get in to Crystal Lake, and that issue is strong enough to cause considerable public push-back to any effort to finish the last 5 miles of 39 -- leave alone the price tag.
I thought about covering the controversy in the extant article, but felt that editors would find that the issue was not very relevant to the extant article. Damotclese (talk) 05:16, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

User talk:Look2See1 The proposed text updates you added need to have citations, I added the "Citation Needed" flag to your text. If you would, would you please add suitable references for the two statements you added, please? I'm plugged in to the events associated with the proposed repairs of Highway 39, and I have never heard of "local residents" (aside from Adam S.) nor heard about any requests that the Caltrans gate be relocated 2 miles North to any trailhead. (Islip if further North, PCT is further North... I can't think of any trailhead that falls 2 miles North of where Caltrans has their gate. I removed the following recent update due to the lack of citations after waiting 3 days for a response from the editor who proposed the addition:
The proposal was abandoned after opposition by local residents and the county, as well as substantial legal pressure by the Forest Service, who threatened to enforce an old contract that requires Caltrans to completely descontruct the highway should it refuse to maintain it.[citation needed] There are proposals to move the closed gate north two miles to a popular trailhead.[citation needed]

5.4 mile section to Angeles closed to public

The section of highway which connects to Angeles Crest Highway 2 is closed to all public, including bicycle and foot traffic however enforcement of the closure is rare. The closure is not just for vehicles. The reason for the closure is safety, the section of the highway still has not been shored up on the south slope of the canyon in some places, but on the North cliff face above the highway the debris has not been pulled down and removed in most of the section, making the materials prone to falling still along the entire length.

The signs for closure are for all humans who are not authorized via emergency or other access. Caltrans' closure is a legal State closure which is what Judges evaluate when people are injured going though the section and then sue Caltrans, the State, and everybody else they think they can get money out of. The fact that the road section is closed to people on foot is why a special permit and safety oversight is needed when the various foot races go through from Wrightwood or Pacific Crest Trail, down 100 feet of Angeles Crest Highway, and on to highway 39 down to Azusa for some of the races.

When Caltrans closes a road, it's closed to everyone, not just motorized vehicles. Damotclese (talk) 16:41, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying – I just seemed to recall the highway being frequently used by hikers and bikers, and also that there's a popular trailhead about 1/4 mile in from the gate at Crystal Lake - I had no idea that was against the law! I suppose we on Wikipedia shouldn't imply or encourage the use of a dangerous road... Shannon 20:06, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes, Islip Trail is accessed from there, it gives access to the Pacific Crest Trail, Little Jimmy Trail Camp, Vincint Gap, Windy Gap, and of course it goes down Windy Gap Trail or Big Cinega down to the Crystal Lake Recreation Area, Deer Flats Group Campground, and the Cafe. :) Good drinking water at the campgrounds and at Little Jimmy Spring!
I have seen USFS and Caltrans as well as CHP not caring when bicycle riders use it, I think it's a matter of legalities that the signs are posted and the rules stipulate closure to all, even people on foot, so that if they are injured, the Judge dismisses the civil lawsuit immediately. I saw a man on foot get questioned by one of the law enforcement LEOs but that was because the guy looked like maybe he was homeless and was about 25 miles from anywhere. Bike riders I have seen get ignored during the day time, but at night some times people on foot or bicycle will be questioned, if only to determine if they have problems or fire-making materials. :( Which is a big problem. :( The CrystalLake.Name web site has a lot of such information, and email to the owner of the web site gets answers about such things -- as well as stories about what he's seen.
