Pronunciation

Hi folks,

I have a question that has bugged me for years. How do you pronounce "calc-alkaline"? I'm assuming it is pronounced kals-alkaline (just like "calcic" is pronounced kalsik) and not pronounced kalk-alkaline as in calculate. But as a native English speaker, I know all too well that words are not always pronounced as expected or like their cognates.

I'm a scientist in another field, and I've read many volcanological books and research papers over the past few years (Igneous Petrology by McBirney is on my shelf). But I've never taken a geology course in college or grad school, and I've never heard anyone say the word "calc-alkaline" yet.

I've tried for years to find out how it is pronounced, occasionally Googling terms like "pronounce calc-alkaline" and such, but all to no avail. Everyone assumes that the first time somebody encounters the term is in a geology or petrology class where the professor says it. So no website, book, or paper ever bothers to give the correct pronunciation.

'Kalk-alkaline' is the way I pronounce it thi is because my lecturers, professors etc at university pronounced it that way. But that could be an artifact of the Australian dialect. Yendor of yinn (talk) 06:05, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
