I'm taking this one just so I have a great excuse to watch Caché tonight. Will start review after I rewatch the film no later than tomorrow. Sock (tock talk) 20:24, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Ribbet32: Apologies for the delay. Appears my copy of the film was not pulled out of a recent move like I thought, so I've purchased it again. Thank you for your patience! Sock (tock talk) 23:03, 14 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Sock: It's been two weeks since the last post. What's the status? Ribbet32 (talk) 04:29, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Ribbet32: Thank you again for your patience with this review. It was a great pleasure to do it, as your work here is nothing short of amazing. Only a few things holding me from passing it outright, and I have no doubt we can get through that pretty quickly.

Specifics

edit

You've done some amazing work here. I honestly don't have very much I think needs to be improved or clarified, which is rare for me. Right off the bat, excellent stuff.

Lead

  • A bit uncertain as to how you chose the actors listed in the infobox and in the lead. Auteuil and Binoche are the only two "on" the poster, while Bénichou is in the billing block. But then, Girardot, Le Coq, Duval, Richard, and Podalydès are all credited in the same way. To me, it should consistently say that it stars Auteuil and Binoche, or that all of these actors should be listed. As it stands it's a weird synthesis of crediting.
    • Tweaked.
  • "The film won three awards at Cannes, including Best Director, five European Film Awards, including Best Film, and other honours." This sentence is a bit of comma overload. I think parentheses would be fine to use here. "The film won three awards at Cannes (including Best Director), five European Film Awards (including Best Film), and other honours." Thoughts?

Apart from those two minor things, this is looking good.

Plot

  • Made a few small changes for less comma usage and general clean up. I don't think any of those would be contentious, so any that I'm not certain about I'll list here.
  • "and hints to Anne that he thinks she is too close with Pierre, a family friend." This doesn't have any significant impact on the plot, and while I appreciate that it's analyzed further down, I don't think it warrants a one-sentence and somewhat off-handed reference with no clear impact. (struck out 15:16, 18 June 2018 (UTC)) You didn't respond to this but upon re-reading it, I'm not a fan of the suggestion. Sock (tock talk) 15:16, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • "When Georges arrives, Majid denies having sent the tapes and kills himself." I'm not sure how exactly, but this could use an allusion to the fact that Majid tells Georges that he wanted him to be there. Georges' suspicion that he was set up by Majid to look like a murderer could possibly be expanded on as well.
    • Added

Historical background

  • "He decided to work it into his story." I feel like this is not as detailed as it could be. I haven't been able to get this book yet, but is a reason for his decision not provided? Any thematic tie-in? If not, that's no issue, it just seems oddly barebones compared to the rest of the article.

Production

  • Made a few edits to development, but overall no outstanding issues for me.
  • "Nathalie Richard previously played Anne Laurent's friend Mathilde in Code Unknown." I know exactly what you mean by this, but it doesn't really clarify that she is again playing a character named Mathilde who is friends with a character named Anne Laurent, but that they are not the same characters from the previous film. As worded, it sounds like Caché is a sequel to Code Unknown, and I'm fairly certain that isn't the case.
    • Tweaked.
  • "Rue des Iris, Paris, was a filming location." This caption restates information directly to its left. Perhaps specifying what place it served in the film, or any comments on it?

Themes and interpretations

  • Did a minor amount of clean up here, but otherwise it's great. All three of these sections are incredibly well-researched and filled out.

Release

  • Not sure why adjusting for inflation is relevant for this article, since it definitely didn't set any box office records.
    • Removed.
  • Cleaned up grammar for RT/Metacritic
  • "Le Parisien gave it three out of four stars, declaring it an excellent thriller, citing Annie Girardot." Seems odd to mention a specific actor and not say what was praised.
    • What else would an actor be praised for?
      • A fair counter, but Girardot is only mentioned thrice in the entire article. If I didn't recognize the name at first, I'd imagine I could think Girardot was another filmmaker Haneke was being compared to or perhaps a crew member. Just seems potentially confusing to me. Sock (tock talk) 15:16, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Legacy

  • "The film's French release was coincidentally followed that month by the 2005 French riots, beginning with three deaths on 27 October". 'Coincidentally' pings an alarm bell for reasons I'm not exactly sure about. I think a phrasing like "The film's French release preceded the 2005 French riots" or something like that, to indicate that it was not responsible but still happened at the same time.

References

  • Just stellar work here. All sources chronicled and archived for future proofing and all necessary information included in spades.

Overall

edit

This is an excellent article, Ribbet. With the handful of tweaks I've mentioned (and applied already) here, I'd be glad to pass this. Honestly, I don't think this is too far away from FA. Sock (tock talk) 23:56, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your review @Sock: Ribbet32 (talk) 00:20, 14 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Ribbet32: Only two things I want to follow up on are the Girardot portion and the caption for the Rue de Iris picture. Otherwise, we're looking great. Sock (tock talk) 15:16, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

A very enthusiastic Pass. Those two edits were worded far better than I likely would've come up with, and your work here is nothing short of excellent. I hope you keep expanding and improving this already great article and that I see this nominated at FAC in the coming months. Great stuff, Ribbet32. Sock (tock talk) 14:46, 22 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
