Size of the Hide edit

I know Maitland's work is more than a century old, but he seems to argue for a hide of 120 acres, not 30. 173.66.211.53 (talk) 04:03, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I believe that you are right! Initially the size of the hide varied according to value and resources of the land itself. In Sussex for example a hide was much smaller than other kingdoms/ counties. Over time the hide was given a set acreage and I believe that the most common size in use was that given by Maitland ie: 120 acres as in Cambridgeshire. However other areas such as Dorset and Wiltshire used units based on 40 to 48 acres. Actually there is in the paragraph before the list. However I agree that it is a little vague, so I have now included some headers to the list. I think that it might also be worth providing some 'see alsos'. Wilfridselsey (talk) 11:30, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

The description below the map states that this is "A map of places named in the Burghal Hidage", but there are only 33 places listed in the text this article. The key to the map doesn't indicate which burhs are ones in the Burghal Hidage and which are later burhs. I'll have a go at making a version of the map that differentiates them.
