The term is used in The Colliery Guardian and Journal of the Coal and Iron Trades, Volume 146, 3 February 1933, page 196: For over-rope haulage there are three different types of clips : — (1) The fork or jigger. (2) The bulldog clip. (3) The lashing chain.
