The David Gilbert article on the Harpers Ferry website, suggests Lewis took a route west of the Monongahela River. Gilbert, to be blunt, got it wrong.
Lewis was part of the Federal army that marched on Pittsburgh in 1794. The route taken by the army, was by way of Uniontown, Brownsville, and directly through Rostraver Township following the Uniontown-Pittsburgh Road laid out in the 1770's, which in time became the basis for PA SR 51. Washington during his 1784 trip to Southwestern Pennsylvania followed the same route. Reading Howell's map of Pennsylvania done in 1792, shows this route from Uniontown to the Mon, and onwards to Pittsburgh clearly marked. When Lewis joined the regular army in 1795, he was stationed in Pittsburgh for a short while and then attached to Wayne's army in the mmid-west. Lewis would in all likelihood have used and followed the best known route, the shortest, and a route he knew and could rely on for stopping to care for his horse, personal needs, and help if needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:543:4003:7808:B557:7DE0:A8EB:6A4D (talk) 19:53, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
