Skatallica / Reel Big Fish Cover

edit

There is a cover of this song that is widely distributed via P2P networks which is labeled as being performed by Reel Big Fish. In fact, it was recorded by a band called Skatallica. At some point the MP3 file was renamed, and the mis-named version made its way around the internet. The Skatallica entry has been deleted, but you can still view the discussion and links on the Talk:Skatallica page. Skatallica should remain on the list to avoid confusion and to prevent the song from inaccurately being attributed to Reel Big Fish.

Sex Pistols

edit

Did the Sex Pistols really cover this song?

Pop Culture Category

edit

This article will need citations and setting up a pop culture/trivia section is not necessary and will be difficult to verify. Agadant 00:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pennywise

edit

On what album is the Pennywise cover? --In Defense of the Artist 22:09, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • If you question (it shows up on a google search) that they did make a cover of Brown Eyed Girl, please just remove their name from the list of covers instead of putting a {citation needed} template on the article. If you find out the album and date, you can put it in parenthesis next to their name. Thanks, Agadant 22:48, 11 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dead Kennedys

edit

Why aren't they on this page? This was actually the first version I ever heard. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Incrediblecorey (talkcontribs) 15:41, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

My apologies if i've posted in the wrong place (I'm new to wikis) I removed the disparaging reference to Ronan Keating, Whilst i agree with the comment it is POV and should not be on this site, and as someone who values resources like wikipedia I couldn't let it slip. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.129.104.222 (talk) 00:39, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Brown Eyed Girl redirect to Jimmy Buffett songs

edit

Is this a new way of linking to cover songs as opposed to putting their name in the category box? What if every cover version was listed in this manner? There have been many, many, cover versions of this song. Everclear would argue theirs is more important as it a more original take on the song. Jimmy Buffett's cover version is popular with his fans but is in no way a defining version of this song. Agadant (talk) 14:24, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

List of Covers Wrong

edit

The list of cover versions in this article appears to be largely erroneous. It looks like someone typed in the title of the song into a file sharing program and just copied down the artists they saw listed. If you simply go to Youtube, you will find versions labeled "Brown Eyed Girl - Green Day", "Brown Eyed Girl - Sex Pistols", "Brown Eyed Girl - Blink 182" - all featuring the same recording. Although this particular recording is fast-paced rock version, it does not seem to be by any of those bands. Likewise, versions labeled with James Taylor and The Rolling Stones are simply mislabeled versions of Van Morrison's original. I can't find evidence in any James Taylor or Rolling Stones discography that either of these artists recorded this song. Same for John Mayer. (I found a version labeled with his name, but it is obvious from the voice that it is not him singing.) IMO, what has likely happened is a confusion caused by faulty mislabeling of mp3 recordings circulated over the internet. What's more, the Isley Brothers and Creedence Clearwater Revival songs of the same name are actually a completely different songs altogether! Morphological (talk) 03:52, 25 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good call: The listing has accumulated over time with mostly separate edits adding different names. Someone would have to check each one out when the edit is made to keep it accurate. I'm working on an article of VM's covers by prominent artists presently that will be thoroughly checked out and sourced; I plan on checking all the covers listed on the song articles and only include sourced ones. But of course to keep it that way will mean removing or checking and sourcing each new edit that doesn't include a reference, so it is a neverending task. Bob Dylan's Brown Eyed Girl is another song, no a cover — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.211.78.254 (talk) 16:23, 11 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Song meaning

edit

It never says in the article what the song meaning is. Did any source ever confirm this? Estheroliver (talk) 02:44, 9 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

It says "the song's nostalgic lyrics about a former love" and that "Originally titled "Brown-Skinned Girl", Morrison changed it to "Brown Eyed Girl" when he recorded it". -That's all that Morrison has said about it. Whether it was based on a true event in his life or not, is not known. Agadant (talk) 13:14, 9 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

4th most played song

edit

I removed the "4th most played song by DJs" reference from the article. The page linked to was for a single DJ and his own personal records of what he plays. It was not a industry wide listed as the sentence that I removed made reference to. --64.134.179.64 (talk) 02:36, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Cover versions

edit

Basically every band has performed Brown Eyed Girl in concert, it's not notable unless that performance was recorded and released on a live album. This section should be seriously trimmed to only those artists that have released a recording (live or studio) of the song. --Khajidha (talk) 17:22, 5 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Put the hyperbole away. I know of at least 100 bands that, to the best of my knowledge, have never performed the song in concert. I do agree that the list should be trimmed to those that can be supported. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:13, 6 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Did Bananarama cover it? I have yet to track down cover versions by The Beatles, Four Tops or Grateful Dead. Also if there are any Black Sabbath/Buckwheat Zydeco/Henry Cow versions they are similarly, umm, elusive. I gave up looking for versions by any other bands, but even so I'd have to tentatively disagree with your claim. 2600:1700:EA01:1090:444:4C18:9ED4:ACD2 (talk) 09:33, 24 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
