Does anyone have the historical results for the cup competition? It might be worth adding the historical results in a separate section?

Also The Rawlinson Plate and other National Championship plates history could be added?

Does anyone have the original committee memebers?

What was there?

  • Chairman? President? - Ellis
  • Webmaster/It - Wasn't this Anna someone?
  • EIHA/SHIA liason or something - I'm pretty sure this was Simon ?? from Nottingham
  • Treasurer? -
  • Secretary? -
  • League Sec - Brewer -

Doesn't Brewer deserve a bit of recognition for keeping the nationals running for 2 years between Alexis R and the advent of the BUIHA?

2004 also saw the introduction of a 2nd Tier of competition to accommodate the many development teams that had sprung up around the country. Fostered by the commitment of the BUIHA to developing the sport on all levels the two competitions continue to improve in standard and size but never forgetting the importance of having fun.

The 2000-2001 year must truly have been a vintage year for the Oxford Vikings, not only was it the last time they won their Varsity Match but they can count amongst their roster both Alexis Rawlinson (founder of the National Championships) and Russell Ellis (founder of the BUIHA).

Indeed it was on the Vikings website that Russell first suggested the idea after his move to London in 2002. Oxford also provided a large part of the committee for that first season too, with Colleen May (Hertford) as Secretary and Emma Eckered (Balliol) as Webmaster. Russell was also fortunate to recruit to his cause the organiser of the 2002 and 2003 national championships Graham Brewer (Newcastle) and with him Andy Miller (Newcastle).

The “gang of five” then set about making plans for the founding of the organisation and commencement of a universities league (later renamed Universities Cup for legal reasons). Their activities drew them to the attention of Simon Hopkins, who’s excellent contacts with the EIHA and BUSA made him a first rate choice for the position of NGB Secretary, and with that the committee was complete.

The aim of the organisation was, and always will be to make ice hockey as freely available as possible and as fun as possible at universities around the UK. With that in mind the early aim was to “deliver the universities to the EIHA on a plate” and get the support of the EHIA and BUSA.

Launching the two tier Cup Competition for the 2003 – 2004 season really got the organisation off to a great start and brought all but one club (Oxford Blues, strangely enough) into the BUIHA fold. The first season was not without problems as some teams did fall by the wayside as the season progressed. However the end of year spectacular, the first BUIHA National Championships was a huge success with Nottingham Mavericks taking home the big prize and Sheffield taking home the littler one.

The following year the expansion of the sport brought more teams into the BUIHA fold and allowed the launch of the Cup Competition’s Division 3, a real opportunity for novices to get out there and enjoy the sport. The year also saw the BUIHA achieve its goal of getting EIHA support, a real coup as they agreed to help continue the development of the sport with a GB Squad and expansion of the National Championships.

The BUIHA continues to expand its operations and now includes over 20 teams, with plans to develop a women’s competition and a GB team. It shall continue to lobby the SIHA for its support and work with Ice Hockey UK and the EIHA to ensure the future of British ice hockey.

This article was mistakenly listed as a Good article. The GA review pointed to the Politics article. It seems like an editor copy and pasted the talk page from that article here. I have assessed the article as a start-class based on the lack of references. Any questions, let me know. Mitico (talk) 12:21, 30 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
