Unfotrunately I don't have time to keep going with this stub tonight as I have to race off to dinner, but I thought I would get the ball rolling. Melbourne central business district may provide some further ideas. Some info that this article needs:

the size of the CBD, dimensions, area.
who surveyed it and when (I used to know this but have forgotten),
when was it settled
significant buildings
width of streets (as compared with other Aust cities they are narrow). One way streets.

The section on bridges could probably be removed and replaced with a link to Bridges of Brisbane, given that the list here is incomplete even if you are only looking at the CBD area. SM247 22:13, 6 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

How can a "Central Business District" be a "suburb"? This sounds impossible by definition. How about "district" (a normal term for a part of a city)? Zaslav (talk) 02:18, 13 June 2010 (UTC) (not Australian)Reply

I agree, zaslav, it sounds strange, but thats the way it is. In Australian metro areas, every piece of land, including the "central business district", are divided up into contiguous, named, "suburbs" covering the whole region. These are used for address definition and postal purposes and are not directly related to local government, voting, or other administrative purposes. For addressing and postal purposes, downtown Brisbane is a "suburb" called "Brisbane". The word "district" has no formal use in Australia.Eregli bob (talk) 02:23, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
