A woman by trade? edit

Mr Lenihan's wife is described as a woman by trade. --Kenmare sherpa 21:01, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Corrected on 15 June 2007 with this edit [1] DutchTreat (talk) 10:10, 12 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Section on the future edit

I have deleted the section entitled "the future" as it was pointless prognostication which was also out of date given recent developments as it made reference to Lenihan being a possible successor to Bertie AhernBrenji (talk) 21:04, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Political establishment edit

I have included a note on Cathy Sinnot's debate with Brian Lenihan on "The Week in Politics", as, in the context of a barrister who is a member of the (usually) ruling party whose father, brother, grandfather and aunt have been or are all in the Dail, the Seanad, or the cabinet, the idea that he might resent the implication that he was a member of the political establishment is remarkable. It certainly indicates a very interesting attitude to his position, which could profitably be explored by others.Muinchille1 (talk) 11:57, 9 June 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Muinchille1 (talkcontribs) 11:52, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

And I include it again. Anyone may review a recording of this RTE programme and listen to him say that he resents the implication that he is a member of the political establishment in these exact terms. Go away, FF Checkists, we know who you are.--Muinchille1 (talk) 13:48, 30 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Maybe you could provide a link to it, so everyone can listen to it. Not that I don't believe you but I like refs. Snappy56 (talk) 14:05, 30 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Budget 2009 edit

The budget section (originally incorrectly titled Budget 2008, budgets are always for the following year) is a bit now-ist and concentrates on 1 issue, Medical cards for whingers, I mean OAPs. Could do with some background and expansion. Snappy56 (talk) 12:06, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Snappy56 calling pensioners whingers is hardly condusive to reaching editing concenus. The editor User: Eurokiwi is new and appears to be adding unreferenced material that is poorly written. I have put a note on users talk page. A review to take into account later up to date info might be wise.Opiumjones 23 (talk) 02:03, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
This is a talk page so I'll call them what I like! It was a joke anyway. Snappy (talk) 06:33, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Naming this article to disambiguate from his father edit

The options for naming this article to disambiguate Lenihan from his eponymous father have been discussed at Talk:Brian Lenihan, Snr#Father_and_son. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:13, 28 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Editing page 28 December 2009 edit

I have made several edits to this page in order to remove unnecessary detail and long rambling paragraphs. There is also far too much local knowledge presumed on the part of the reader. This page needs a tight rewrite by someone who can report Irish politics in a concise, detached manner. The page also contains personal opinion. (Brenmar)

After I made the edits to the Brian Lenihan, Jnr entry Candlewicke undid them. Rather than get into a tit-for-tit undoing session, I would prefer to discuss the entry as it stood before my changes. Firstly, the information contained in the piece is long and rambling. It would read better and be more impressive it was written in a tighter form.

Secondly, it contains irrelevant information that slows down the reader and distracts from the core of the matter. e.g. naming the presenter of Liveline; and including the name of the journalist who thinks he might be the next leader of Fianna Fail. What is important are the facts of the matter and not all this extraneous detail. If these people need to to be mentioned, they are in the attribution references.

Thirdly, the detail about Lenihan visiting McWilliams at home should be included in his ministerial history and not his private life. The detail of his cancer should be in his private life. The excessive detail later in the piece should be cut down as much of it is a nine-day wonder.

I would ask that other Wiki editors give their views on the quality, style and content of this article. (Brenmar) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.43.211.249 (talk) 05:51, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have removed some idle speculation on whether he could be a future Taoiseach, most senior members of cabinet are speculated on in this way, so its not relevant and is only Matt Coopers (or whoever) personal opinion. Also I have removed the silly reference to him being the most competent member of the current government. It would not be hard to find loads of reliable references saying the exact opposite and stating that he is the worst Minister for Finance ever, but we should leave out these kinds of opinions and commentary. Snappy (talk) 12:25, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
The article has been changed in recent days, citations were lacking before, etc. Sorry if anyone's toes were stood on, it wasn't all in the correct order and still needs work even now and ought to be tightened. As this appears to be controversial and the article is well looked after I won't edit it. --candlewicke 16:09, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree that Cooper's opinion and the speculation about Lenihan's future as FF leader should be deleted.Like Candlewicke, I don't really want to edit the article as it is too much work! 90.201.21.116 (talk) 23:38, 29 December 2009 (UTC) BrenmarReply

Why is this article "Jnr" and not "Jr."? edit

"Jnr" is an archaic form, modern usage is "Jr." Green Cardamom (talk) 16:54, 31 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I thought Jr. was the American usage, and that Jnr was what was used on this side of the Atlantic. Snappy (talk) 18:55, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
It seems Brits have gotten sloppy and are following in the footsteps of their lazy journalists. It wasn't always that way: All you have to do is pick up an old copy of an Arthur Conan Doyle story and you'll find that they used to put periods at the end of abbreviations, such as Mr., Mrs., St., etc., and except for some spelling differences, usage was the same in the U.S. and England. My suggestion is that this article be moved to Brian Lenihan, Jr. — QuicksilverT @ 23:37, 10 June 2011 (UTC)  — QuicksilverT @ 23:37, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

    • That discussion didn't come to any conclusion on this issue, but instead adopted an alternative disambiguation. Andrewa (talk) 03:53, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Note: the WP:NCP#Senior and junior section linked in the archive at the time was [3], which has since been incorporated into WP:NCP#Disambiguating. DMacks (talk) 05:27, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose without further evidence of usage. Wouldn't this be a case that falls under WP:ENGVAR? The implication of WP:NCP#Ordinals is that they shouldn't be spelt out but it does not directly proscribe the non-American abbreviation. —  AjaxSmack  21:55, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - It is proposed to move to the Standard naming convention yet no evidence is provided that this proposal is the standard. Is it a US, international standard or what? Also, good to see that the proposer explicitly supports the proposal. ;-) Snappy (talk) 22:24, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
    • Oppose. Well put (;-> and I also see that they misquote the previous discussion, see above. Andrewa (talk) 03:56, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment wouldn't using Brian Lenihan II be better? Then you don't have to worry about whether it is in Amierican or British 65.94.47.63 (talk) 07:03, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • He was never known by this style, this would be a wikipedia invention. Snappy (talk) 20:13, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Neutral per WP:NCP#Disambiguating, which does give an explicit standard (the preferred format is with ", Sr." or ", Jr." written after the name with no ENGVAR comments) vs WP:ENGVAR (use nationality-appropriate spelling for topics with intrinsic nationality). Date of marriage edit

I took out the reference to his being married in 1997 after finding this Sunday Tribune profile, featuring a photo of Brian Lenihan Sr (who died in 1995) at Brian Jr's wedding. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lemur27 (talkcontribs) 18:30, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Tribune dates it as 1995 but I'm not sure this is right either, given Brian Sr's sprightliness, Brian Jr's youthfulness and Haughey's prominence (very scientific I know). Late eighties I would imagine. Lemur27 (talk) 22:59, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Maybe someone can tell the year from the style of the Bride's dress, it would be just as scientific! Snappy (talk) 21:06, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Touché ... considering the conflicting info, though, perhaps it's best to omit dates. Lemur27 (talk) 13:07, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Probably is, the Irish Times (normally reliable) said 1997, which we know is wrong. Snappy (talk) 18:54, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
