Talk:Brendon McCullum

Baz? edit

I can't really find anything which suggests that he is actually known by Baz - the reference added to support his actually refers to him as Brendan in the text of the article and only uses Baz in the title, almost as an attempt at an Onomatopoeiac adjective. I'm not sure I see anything which would suggest "known by a nickname used in lieu of or in addition to a given name" as such. He may be known as that, I'm not sure. Further to that, I'm afraid that Baz (or Bazza) is a really very common hypocorism for Barry (or Barrie in this case) so "and it is not a common hypocorism[d] of one of their names" would seem to be failed.

I may be wrong on this. Certainly Baz may belong in the infobox if we can find very much use of it, but it's absolutely an hypocorism. Open to see lots of refs though. Blue Square Thing (talk) 19:06, 25 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yep, its his common nickname. His twitter account is even named so [1] and his instragram [2]: personal social media that would suggest he associates with that nickname himself, and its not just others. I'm afraid that Baz (or Bazza) is a really very common hypocorism for Barry - The further MOS guidance, As a guide to what is a "common" hypocorism, consider consulting the Hypocorism#English: Baz doesn't appear. He's also not known as Barrie, he's known as "Brendon McCullum" and Baz is not a shortening of Brendon. You've removed "Baz" even from the infobox because "" but you've left "B-Mac, Brendie, Mr. Fantastic" which have no supporting reference.

Yeah, I found, what, 2,800 or so GHITs for "Baz McCullum" and, what, 700,000 for "Brendon McCullum". Tbh I'd be happy to remove nicknames from the majority of cricketers, and can see a case for Baz in there - but it's a really common hypocorism (see Baz (name)). I'm not sure I see the name as being best in the lead sentence, but as a nickname it's sensible enough. I probably over-reacted earlier and should have left it as a nickname at least.
