"Hana yori dango" is a saying that "Food is more important than flowers". Hana is Cherry blossoms in Hanami, and Dango is a popular food for hanami. People enjoy hanami party just having food and Alcoholic beverage, fogetting to watch flowers. The saying implies some irony.--Mochi 11:12, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Redirection

Shouldn't 'Boys over Flowers' redirect to 'Hana Yori Dango' instead of the other way around? If choosing the most common used name, in my opinion it would be Hana Yori Dango, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Unfortunately I must disagree. Although Hana Yori Dango may be the most popular term for the anime series, Boys Over Flowers is the official title for the English release, and this being English wikipedia, Boys Over Flowers is the correct title for this article. -- Miss Ethereal 15:52, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the convention is to "Use the most common name of a person or thing that does not conflict with the names of other people or things" and to "Name your pages in English and place the native transliteration on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly recognized by readers than the English form" (emphasis added). I have never heard of "Boys Over Flowers," and only by thinking about, translating it in my mind, did I have any idea what the subject was (prior, of course, to clicking on the link and finding out). I agree with the idea that it should be boys over flowers because of this been English wikipedia, if there is no official English name for the series it should be given the original name, but since there is an official English name. not an ova but a movie

OVA literally means 'original video animation', meaning a straight to video release. The HYD movie was released in theaters in Japan, so it is in fact a movie and not an OVA. So I changed it in the introduction and added the movie part in the infobox. The Japanese TV drama needs to be added there too. Ninja neko 17:46, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

I've been wanting to delete this section as there are no supporting references, though the information shown is true. It was typed in a personal matter, rather than informative. The drama

I know we have most of the actors for the drama listed under the Character list, but does anyone else feel that the drama could use its own section? It's shaping up to be VERY different from the anime, even in the second season when Shigeru shows up, though I unfortunately haven't read the manga so I don't know how much of a difference there is there. Anyway, I do feel that the drama deserves more than a little space in the infobox and a single-line mention in the intro, you know what I mean? Nique talk 15:31, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

It's being considered now, as there are going to be new versions coming out, one being produced in Korean right now. As this article is geeting too long, it's likely to use this article for the mange, keep the infobox, but from the infobox, we can link it to new, separated articles. Character List / Manga & TV Series Articles

The characters section is really boring. It doesn't say anything about the main characters, it just lists the name, the kanji, and the actors who have portrayed them in Japanese through voice or live-action, with a couple of blurbs on more minor characters. I think we should cut the list down to the most important characters (the ones we really get to know, who appear in all the versions of the story (drama, manga, anime) and who have strong, consistent impacts on the story), and then elaborate on their characters, as well as add the English voice actors where we can. My suggestion for the main list would be Tsukushi, Tsukasa, Rui, Akira, Sojiro, Kaede, and Shigeru (who isn't even mentioned on the list right now). Then we could have a minor characters list, to include Shizuka, Tsubaki, Junpei (who again, is not mentioned at all), Tsukushi's family, and other characters who, again, appear in all three versions and have smaller, but still significant, impacts on the story. (I'm not terribly familiar with the manga, but is it safe to assume that it has all of the characters I've listed?) Anyway, any thoughts? Nique talk 15:40, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

My idea was to add the character info on the list on this page, and if it gets larger, maybe move it to it's own article and just keep the main ones (like Tsukushi and the F4) on this article. I don't really have the time to write character profiles, so I just started with the two I could describe in one sentence, to get the thing started. (Domyoji's mom did play quite a role in the manga near the end if I remember well, she kept driving Domyoji and Tsukushi apart.) Ninja neko 19:28, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, but my point is that she's not as major a role as Tsukushi, or even the members of the F4. It's still probably a better idea to split them into main and minor, give everyone a decent description, and then remove characters who don't appear in all the versions (or at least say which medium they appeared in/didn't appear in), especially since (as I said in a previous discussion) the drama is shaping up VERY differently from the anime and, I'm guessing, the manga. Although this discussion is dead, I've only watched the drama series of Hana Yori Dango, and I'm a bit confused with the character list. It is, in fact, boring, and really incomplete. Some characters I find, are not in the drama. I think the series should be put into its own article, to not conflict with the original manga. From Nique's comment, I agree about the fact that the character list is shaping up very differently, conflicting the presentation of characters portrayed in the manga, anime, and even the TV series. I agree, however, this doe not just apply to the character list. Though it looks like this current article was originally based for the manga; I believe it would be better based on that. Than live action series (TV series) will have their own respective articles, one for each version. Knowing that it will be intensive work to cleanup this article. From there, information within these articles feature certain, relevent information. However, more in-depth information, such as character and episode lists, will be linked to another article. Indeed it seems the article was solely for the manga. More so, there are already pages on meteor garden and 2 and boys over flowers. It seems quite pointless to have repeated information. the meaning of hana yori dango

I dont know japanese really, mainly just the basics, but 'dango' is a food, right? So shouldn't Hana Yori Dango be translated to "Food Over Flowers"? melissa 20:22, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

If you read the Trivia section, it explains the naming. The kanji is normally read 'danshi' but the furigana say 'dango', so that it's the same as the original saying, but with a different meaning. Nique talk 14:01, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Meteor Shower

As you may be aware, Meteor Shower is an unlicensed production unauthorized by Kamio Yoko. Accordingly, this show cannot be called a Hana Yori Dango and must not be listed as such. Listing it as such is like endorsing a blatant theft of intellectual property like buying counterfeit Chinese goods and pirated DVDs. There is nothing to dispute. Meteor Shower is unlicensed and unauthorized by Kamio Yoko, and the show's own very producers say THIS IS NOT AN ADAPTATION OF Hana Yori Dango in interviews. So why does a show that has nothing to do with Hana Yori Dango belong in this page?

There will be a legal and fully licensed version of Chinese language Hana Yori Dango someday, sometime in 2011 or thereafter. Meteor Shower isn't it and doesn't claim to be. Putting Meteor Shower in this page is like putting the movie Hero in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because both are Kung Fu movies and Hero was inspired by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Accordingly Meteor Shower must be removed from this page. There is already a page for it and let it stand by itself, a show inspired by but unrelated to Meteor Garden. We are looking to hear from Meteor Shower supporters on why an unlicensed, unauthorized, and unrelated(according to the show's own producers) production like Meteor Shower should be listed on this page. Their lack of response itself is the proof that Meteor Shower doesn't belong here.

There has been only three licensed and legal HYD drama productions to date. Meteor Garden series, Hana Yori Dango series, and Boys Over Flowers. Listing of Meteor Shower on this page constitutes a violation of Kamio Yoko and Shueisha's copyrights, something that's not tolerated at wikipedia. First of all, there is no copyright violation in mentioning an unauthorized adaptation. Nor is the claim that Meteor Shower is an adaptation of Boys Over Flowers a violation of Yoko's copyright. The question is the verifiability of the claim that Meteor Shower is an adaptation of Boys Over Flowers. But it doesn't appear that the IP is actually disputing the adaptation claim itself, but is instead stating that the claim itself is a copyright violation. Including Meteor Shower references in the main article gives a false impression to casual visitors that Meteor Shower is an authorized and fully licensed production like others; we know it isn't. As for the copyrights violation issue, there could be two interpretations. If we were to agree that Meteor Shower is an HYD adaptation, then Meteor Shower is illegal since Meteor Shower doesn't have a HYD adaptation license. If we were to agree that Meteor Shower is not a HYD adaptation, then Meteor Shower is legal but doesn't belong in this page since it has nothing to do with HYD. Are we going to start adding every Chinese idol drama productions to this page because of certain resemblance to Hana Yori Dango?

Is the problem with the way that the information is presented? I can understand not wanting to include Meteor Shower directly alongside the official HYD installations without any explanation or differentiation. Tentatively, I want to say that perhaps this material should not be included "inline" in the templates. What if we were to include a short section about Meteor Shower at the bottom of the page, explaining what the producers have said about it and what anyone else in the press has said about it? That's how it was, with Meteor Shower references removed from the main article and a short sub-section at the bottom explaining Meteor Shower as an unauthorized Chinese production similar to Hana Yori Dango. This is the most accurate way to handle this kind of situation.

Do we now have a consensus that Meteor Shower isn't a dramatization of Hana Yori Dango as stated by the producers of Meteor Shower themselves, and that the references of Meteor Shower should be removed from the main article accordingly?

I have no problem with removing mention of Meteor Shower from the templates and main article (from the areas where official HYD installations are listed), and including a short section explaining MS' status. Adaptations

Written above, the general consensus appears to be that Meteor Shower is not an adaptation of Boys Over Flowers. So I don't understand why Boys Before Friends and Kaisi Yeh Yaariyan are included on the page since both are unauthorized/loosely-based adaptations just like Meteor Shower. In fact, they have stated that Boys Before Friends is an original work (after claiming it was an adaptation of the manga). I'm not sure about Kaisi Yeh Yaariyan being authorized, though I doubt it since it only seems to be inspired by the premise of the series. So...I'm just asking, why are these two series included, while Meteor Shower is excluded?Samanthafan09 (talk) 05:44, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Also I've done some research on Siapa Takut Jatuh Cinta (the Indonesian verision listed in the infobox), though I couldn't find much info on it. 2	"No-Brand Woman!!"	Tsukushi starts her new life being praised for her bravery. She goes to the back exit to meet Rui Hanazawa. She ends up being Kidnapped by Tsukasa Domyouji. Instead of what she thought was going to be torture, she gets a complete makeover. He acts arrogant and they get into huge argument declaring she is a "No-Brand Woman." She gets invited to a casual party only to be tricked by the evil girls.
3	"I Won't Get Hurt!!"	She stands up to the evil girls with her emotion detector. At school, she reminds herself not to fall in love. Again she goes to the back of the school and meets Rui again. The evil girls show who Rui is really in love with. Tsukasa saves her from being bullied and then gets invited to a picnic with the F4. After being insulted, Tsukasa straightens his hair. A model named Shizuka Todou comes into the picture.
4	"The Ordinary Duo"	Tsukushi, still heartbroken decided to give up on Rui and move on. At school, an old childhood friend comes into the picture making Tsukasa jealous. In the heat of jealousy, Tsukasa gives Kazuya Aoike a red card. But to his anger, they actually become closer. Tsukushi yells at Tsukasa causing him to slap her across the face. When she was getting bullied in the cafeteria, Rui came and saved her.
5	"Him, Me, and That Guy"	After saving Tsukushi, Rui is banned from the F-4. Shizuka takes Tsukushi to the restroom to fix her up. Kazuya invites Tsukushi to his family's vacation property over in Atami for summer vacation, and Tsukushi agrees before feeling too ill to stand and passing out. This causes Tsukushi to stay home in bed with a cold which later makes Tsukasa come for a visit. Later that night Domyouji offers to pay her way into Hawaii, but Tsukushi refuses, saying that she will be going with Kazuya to Atami for the summer. This irritates Domyouji
6	"One Night Cinderella"	Tsukushi has decided to travel with her parents and Kazuya to Atami for their summer vacation. Tsukushi and Kazuya reach the beach, and are standing on a pier when they suddenly hear the loud horn of a passing boat. The boat is a yacht owned by Tsukasa, and everyone on the beach is staring at it because it is so huge, and it is so close to shore. Shizuka ends up inviting Tsukushi and Kazuya to a party on the boat that evening. That night, Shizuka is working on Tsukushi's looks. Shizuka has let Tsukushi borrow a dress, and is working on the girl's hair, nails, and make-up. It is time for the party at last. Everyone is in a ballroom mingling, when Shizuka leads Tsukushi down some stairs to greet the crowd. It is a very fairy tale moment as the crowd all stops and stares at Shizuka and Tsukushi. The lights go out later for a kiss game which Tsukushi refuses to play. Suddenly Tsukushi is jostled forward by someone in the dark, and she goes rushing forward, only to land with her lips right against someone elses! Tsukushi's first kiss is with Doumyouji!
7	"Night of Love in Atami"	Upset, she runs from the ballroom. She stands at the ship's railing and stares out to the ocean and feels dismayed about what has happened. He says that she should be glad that her first kiss was with him, honored even. This of course makes Tsukushi very upset. The next day, a crowd has gathered on the beach, staring in amazement at the group of rich people on the beach sitting on lounge chairs under umbrellas and having servants waiting on them. That night on the boat, Kazuya confronts Doumyouji, angry at him for what he did with Tsukushi. Kazuya wants to fight one-on-one. Later, Rui says that the idea of him liking Tsukushi is a joke. He laughs. Tsukushi stands there shocked, listening in on the conversation. Meanwhile, out on a fishing boat, Kazuya and Doumyouji are fishing for squids. Kazuya gloats because he has caught 10 while Doumyouji has caught none. Doumyouji has woken up everyone on the yacht and gathered them on the front deck to eat squid. Just then Doumyouji yells over to them to offer some squid to Rui, thus relieving a tense moment for Tsukushi with Rui. Tsukushi thanks Doumyouji for saving her, but says that from tomorrow on she won't be easy on him.
8	"Nightmare of The Fall Term"	Tsukasa starts the day off in a good mood while Tsukishi is trying to understand her dream. Tsukushi goes to the stairway, and is disappointed when she sees that Rui isn't there. Then Tsukushi is surprised when Rui comes up behind her. Rui sits down on the stairs and tells her to sit down too. Tsukushi just sort of sits there staring at the ground. Doumyouji gets to the staircase and is startled/angry to discover Tsukushi there alone with Rui. Doumyouji stands in the doorway and just watches them, looking extremely angry. Akira and Soujirou are worried by the look they see in Doumyouji's eyes, like he could kill someone. Doumyouji leaves them and walks down the hall.
9	"Domyouji Tsukasa Snaps!!"	Tsukushi is walking down the hall, thinking about Shizuka when she hears sounds of a crowd, and someone being beaten up. She rushes to the scene and finds a large crowd gathered. Doumyouji's voice can be heard yelling. Tsukushi at first thinks that it is Kazuya who is being beaten up, but it is someone else. Later; Tsukushi realizes that she had left her textbooks at the staircase. She goes to get them, where she finds Doumyouji waiting, holding the voice memo. Tsukushi stumbles and falls to the ground. Doumyouji looms over her and grabs onto her. Tsukushi is crying. Doumyouji is still, as he thinks about what he has done and calms down. He feels remorse for his actions and lays a soothing hand on Tsukushi's head, telling her not to cry, he will hurt her no more. At Shizukas party; It isn't until the last moment that Tsukushi realizes that of course the F4 have been invited to the party too, and Tsukushi will have to face Doumyouji again.
10	"The Woman Who Gave Up Everything"	Tsukushi, Yuki, and Kazuya have arrived at Shizuka's house for her birthday party. Tsukushi sees Doumyouji surrounded by beautiful models, each of them gushing over him, telling him that he didn't call, or that it is long time no see, etc. Tsukushi gets very annoyed to see Doumyouji get all of this attention. Later Shizuka announces that she intends to live in France and study law, becoming a lawyer in order to help people. Shizuka pulls out a pair of scissors and cuts off all her hair. The crowd is still speechless until the reporters rush forward to get answers from Shizuka.
11	"Love Flies Over The Horizon"	Tsukushi is thinking about Rui and Shizuka's relationship. At the airport, Nishikado, Akira, Doumyouji, Tsukushi, and Kazuya are all there to see Shizuka off. Everyone has noticed the absence of Rui, and try to get a hold of him on the phone, but can't reach him. The time has come for Shizuka to go to France. With a sad goodbye to everyone, she gets on the plane and leaves. As soon as Shizuka's plane takes off, Rui makes his appearance. Everyone angrily demands where he has been, and Rui says that he has been at the airport the whole time, watching from behind a pillar. Rui then holds up an airplane ticket and says that he already has booked a ticket for the next flight to France. Rui thanks Tsukushi for making him realize his feelings, and he kisses her on the head. Then Rui boards his plane and leaves for France after Shizuka. Doumyouji approaches Tsukushi and they watch the planes together for a minute. Then he asks her out on a date. Just as he asks her, a plane is taking off, so Tsukushi cannot hear him. Doumyouji says to never mind, they will talk about it later.
