Farm bothy

This article describes the modern "mountain shelter" bothy but it says little or nothing about the farm toun bothy from which it is derived. There is a need for a description of the evolution and history of the bothy to be added to the article. -- Derek Ross | Talk

Agree. I thought about that when I first discovered this article recently. Please see DSL:

I am rather surprised to see that the earliest citation in DSL is as recent as 1771:

• 1771 T. Pennant Tour in Scot. 1769 102: "Bothay, a dairy-house, where the Highland shepherds, or graziers, live during summer with their herds and flocks, and during that season make butter and cheese."

But probably the kind of people familiar with bothies didn't write about them much?

Probably bothies deserve a mention when someone starts the Transhumance farming article. Agricultural topics are extremely poorly catered for here at Wikipedia, compared to some other science and industry topics. --Mais oui! 06:46, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

My mistake. The article does exist, so I just redirected the above redlink to point at Transhumance. The Isle of Lewis gets a mention, but not bothies. --Mais oui! 06:48, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I wonder of the articels could be edited a bit as Bothy, Lean-to, Wilderness Hut and Bivouac often seem to be the same thing when I look thru the different language versions of wikipedia.

As an encylopedia I feel that there are 2 uses: 1. shelter for travellers / holiday makers (albeit a kind of traveller) AND 2. Work huts for temporary agricultural living / science like bird watching.

Perhaps bothy is just the SCOTS language word for wilderness survival huts? Perhaps someone could sort out these diff aspects and make it clearer. there is difficulty with the articles in ENglish being SCotland centric, and so bothys in Suomi or Deutschland do not get treated properly. Its an aspect that affects a lot of wikipedia (just look at self-defence or any law topic). But here it could be split with a general articel and then specific ones about "Wilderness shelters in each country respectively" this can be seen for example in Swine flu outbreak 2009 where there is a general article in ENglish and then further country specific ones. I agree wholeheartedly. As everybody writes about the local phenomenons with local sources, the articles give the feeling they are unique concepts, even when similar ones are common around the world. Categories help finding them, but as here, writing the general article is much more difficult. --LPfi (talk) 09:45, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
