Reversion to a much older version

edit

I've reverted the page back to a modified form of a much older version of this article. I'm hoping that this article will retain good standards, as I was insulted to see the page wrecked from vandals, especially given as I lived here for the first 17 years of my life. -- TheChrisD 18:14, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Public transport

edit

Much as transport in Dublin 15 is poor, could we maybe use a phrase other than "the average .... peaks" - this is stating the maximum time as the average which it is not. Alternatively, a range of times, or a reported true average would be much more appropriate. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.40.151.66 (talk) 20:56, 10 April 2007 (UTC).Reply

About the traffic. The article states that too many small roads etc... The reality is that if you want to go to the city centre from Blanchardstown you don't have many options. You have to go through the N3/Navan Road or Via Castleknock. Partly due to geographical reasons, Blanchardstown is split from the rest of the city, because of the M50, and only two main connections connect it. More connections are probably hard to create, due to the Tolka and the Liffey giving a natural (protected) border.
With only 2 main connections and the amount of traffic, it is no wonder traffic is so bad. By creating a lot of estates, all cars are forced on the same roads anyway. This and the overwhelming amount of traffic lights simply stops all flow. 159.134.94.21 13:39, 31 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The section on transport is hardly NPOV is it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nialler (talkcontribs) 11:09, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

The whole part on transport is true. There is a request for a lot of citations, understandably, but it’s all true. I live in B-town and it reflects reallity.Eurocanna (talk) 19:48, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Population

edit

where did the figure of 90,952 come from. According to the 2006 census, it was 62,976. see http://citypopulation.de/Ireland.html JJB 20:02, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

County

edit

The article lists fingal as a County. This is incorrect it is a county borrough.

Lists from recent edits

edit

Some good work has been done to develop the article, and I have just made a few edits to compact it a bit. However, I think further compaction of the schools section is probably worthwhile (the adjoining Junior and Senior, and B and C schools, can share lines, maybe?) Also, the community and voluntary section is a fine list, but needs narrative text. And the External Links section is simply too long, and needs editing - some of these could be attached as citations, and some are perhaps best left to explicit directories such as DMOZ. Overall, though, good to see. If the Links and voluntary sections improve just a bit, I think the article can be up-rated to C. SeoR (talk) 09:07, 15 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Demographics section

edit

I just fixed a typo in this section, but I'm concerned that the statistics are unsourced. Additionally, the statement: ("Blanchardstown has one of the highest percentage of non-Irish in the country, and the lowest percentage of white Irish") is also unsourced, and, even if comparisons like that are WP:DUE here, they should certainly not be unsupported. Is there some sourcing for these items elsewhere which I'm missing? -- Begoon 02:30, 4 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I share this concern. And indeed the others raised on the editor's talkpage. On this particular one, I had tagged this as needing a cite some time ago. And have attempted to assist the editor to address this tag. Unfortunately without success. Given that the stats (and the claims) do not stand-up to the stats that I have been able to find, I would support just removing them. (For example, according to the 2016 SAPMAP data, the Electoral Division of Blanchardstown-Roselawn is 87% white Irish, Blanchardstown-Corduff is 78% white Irish, etc. Some other electoral areas in the Blanchardstown catchment have different (sometimes more diverse) ethnic make-ups. But without understanding where the stats "come from", it looks like we're not taking the aggregate. Guliolopez (talk) 11:04, 4 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
From what I can tell, Galway is the most ethnically diverse city (19.4% non-Irish) in Ireland,[1] while Ballyhaunis is often toted as the most ethnically diverse town in the country (at only 40% white Irish).[2][3]
Based on the 2011 census (page 16 of this), the most ethnically diverse EDs of Dublin include The Ward[4] and Airport[5], as well as some parts of the inner city, as expected. Blanchardstown, although bordering the Ward electoral division, does not seem to be any more ethnically diverse than much of the rest of the city or suburbs.
I suspect the editor was simply confused, and the statement should probably be removed. Wasechun tashunkaHOWLTRACK 18:36, 4 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you both - I'm still waiting for the editor to properly clarify on their talk page, at User talk:JackW436#Blanchardstown, but it seems there's consensus not to include this unsourced content in the meantime, so I've removed it for now. -- Begoon 11:23, 5 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Photos on page

edit

I believe that the photos on the page should be the same width as the box on the top right of the page. I recently had them so but someone changed them to thumbnails. Can we agree or not to have the same width, or at least bigger? Darren J. Prior (talk) 14:29, 21 April 2019 (UTC)Darren J. PriorDarren J. Prior (talk) 14:29, 21 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

It's ok about what I was asking for. I was using a big screen desktop the last couple of days and on it the photos come up as really small and now I am using a laptop and they look ok. I can't have it both ways I suppose. :) Darren J. Prior (talk) 14:43, 22 April 2019 (UTC)Darren J. PriorDarren J. Prior (talk) 14:43, 22 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Generally speaking, the MOS guideline and convention expects that an image sits alongside the text that it supports. For example, an image of the local hospital sitting alongside the text which discusses that hospital. (Per WP:MOSIMAGES and WP:GALLERY specifically, "[images] are typically placed individually near the relevant text".)

I don't understand how a recent change, to move pretty much every image "down the end" aligns with this guideline or convention. And so I have reverted it.

I also don't understand how a recent change, to create a gallery which is blocked into "sections" (somewhat mirroring the sections in the body) aligns with the Help:Gallery tag guidelines either. And so I have reverted that too.

If there are extra images, that cannot "fit" within or alongside the text, then it should be OK to create a separate gallery down the end. Which I have done. But such a gallery shouldn't replace or supersede the inline images. And shouldn't need to be segregated into "single row" sections. As, if it is split like that, then it's not a gallery.

Happy to help as needed. But there shouldn't be any reason to create a problem (relative to MOS guidelines). And then invent our own solutions to that self-inflicted problem.... Guliolopez (talk) 16:33, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Why? Because as you noted above, the images "cannot "fit" within or alongside the text". There are simply too many. As I plan to include more, they would just drag along the bottom in a vertical line with an enormous gap between the last line of text and the start of the categories. Am open to other options. Laurel Lodged (talk) 21:21, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hiya.
RE: "cannot fit". As you might have noted, I moved all the images that "cannot fit" to the gallery down the end. Leaving, at present, just one representative/relative image per section. This is probably better than having no inline/supporting images.
RE: "why?". As this is more in keeping with WP:GALLERY guidelines. Which expects that images be normally "placed individually near the relevant text". Rather than some distance from it.
RE: "simply too many / plan to include more". This seems a bit of an oxymoron. Conflicting with itself. And with the WP:NOTGALLERY guideline. Which makes it clear that Wikipedia is not Wikimedia Commons. A handful of extra images in the gallery might be OK. But please try to avoid the temptation to put in too many. As you note. And perhaps try to avoid the temptation to use the gallery/article as a form of editorial soapbox. As recently. Image captions aren't entirely "exempt" from the NPOV and VER guidelines.

Leo Varadkar

edit

Could someone please remove Varadkar from the list of notable people. He is not from Blanchardstown. He is from neighbouring Castleknock. This inaccuracy would draw the ire of both communities. 109.76.84.94 (talk) 22:25, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi. The relevant entry at Brittanica.com (seemingly written by a longstanding geography and history editor at Encyclopaedia Britannica and apparently "fact-checked" by others at Encyclopaedia Britannica) gives that "Varadkar grew up in the Blanchardstown/Castleknock area". His entry on the Fine Gael website says pretty much the same thing. Absent a clear reason not to reflect either of these sources, I'm not seeing the case for removal. I'm also unclear how or where "the ire of both communities" comes into it. Guliolopez (talk) 02:13, 13 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
