Removed material
editI removed the sentence "A black belt is only a white belt that never gave up!" from the end of the first paragraph, as it struck me as being nowhere near encyclopædia material. 89.236.57.174 (talk) 15:03, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Error in Misconceptions
editFact-of-the-matter (talk) 14:36, 15 August 2010 (UTC)The Misconceptions section notes that the "white belt turning black with age" traditions is simply a misconception. While this is true in Japanese traditions, and in many others as well, some Kung Fu schools did practice this, for example the Shaolin, I believe (don't quote me on this, I have no sources to back it up off the top of my head) use this practice, at least at one time. In this case, if there is a misconception, it is simply that this practice was universal, rather than confined to only a few Kung Fu schools. I don't have any sources to back this up right now, as pretty much all my stuff is in boxes as I pack up for college, but I would recommend addressing the issue in some fashion, or simply removing this from the misconceptions section for now.Fact-of-the-matter (talk) 14:36, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Relative Ranks
editRegarding the statement 'ranks coming more or less automatically with time done in Japan.' This seems to be a matter of opinion rather than fact. In fact, (Japanese) Kodokan grades in Judo are commonly perceived to be more difficult to obtain than those of other ranking organisations and therefore commonly sought after and highly valued by Western Judoka. Perhaps the original statement applies more to certain styles of Karate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.209.80.120 (talk)

In popular culture
editIn popular culture, we see the term "black belt" used to signify expertise in a certain field, such as a Six Sigma Black Belt certification. Kortoso (talk) 12:39, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
The Actual Belt
editThis article fails to go into the details of the belt itself. Where did it come from? How was it traditionally tied? — Preceding unsigned comment added by B0ef (talk • contribs) 22:25, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
Fake photo?
editAnyone else think this photo looks strange? The lighting looks different (compare shadows on noses, one from left, one from underneath). They look super imposed on the background. Their hand sizes look wildly different. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_belt_(martial_arts)#/media/File:Goju_NiDan_Rabyoung-Thonden-Gyalkhang.jpg TFJamMan (talk) 21:49, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- I agree, it's photoshopped. The white of their ghi don't match (one more yellow, the other more blue), their heads don't match the bodies, the bodies don't match the background perspective...something is off and I don't think it should be used in an encyclopedia. Wikipedia can do better. --EarthSprite∞ 21:07, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
