Name of the FARMER?? edit
"the song involves spelling the name of the farmer. " Really? Who in their right mind could thing that Bingo is the name of the farmer, but of the dog? - Agreed, and I think that this snippet from the "Earlier forms" section lends credence to the title referring to the dog, not the farmer: "An early transcription of the song (without a title) dates from the 1785 songbook "The Humming Bird",[4] and reads: This is how most people know the traditional children's song: The farmer's dog leapt over the stile, his name was little Bingo...." And besides, doesn't it sound more like a dog's name than a person's? Whoever wrote this simply asserts that Bingo refers to the farmer, with no reference to that, then goes on to say that people who associate the name with the dog are "confused." --FF9 (talk) 00:51, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

- Interesting find, thank you. I'd never even heard of this song before. At first I assumed they'd simply borrowed the melody, but this song seems to be quite old. I'd even make a page for it, but I don't have so much free time lately.
- Coincidences happen .... I thought Rihanna's We Found Love in a Hopeless Place sounded a lot like Aurora's The Day it Rained Forever and it took me a long time to admit that there's almost certainly no relation .... but both of these songs are considerably older and one may indeed have influenced the other. In the part where they are similar, the Bingo song has fewer notes, and since the name was chosen for the song, one might think that if they had borrowed the melody they would have chosen a longer name to more closely fit the original melody. Buuuuut .... that would make the song longer, and children often want to get to the end of the song quickly. So, really, I cant help, and Im interested to see if anyone else knows more.
