Pronoun Usage edit

If Big Freedia identifies as a gay man, why are the pronouns used on this page "she/her"? Trillsongunited (talk) 16:29, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

In the most recent sources - which WP MOS:GENDERID policy says we use, even if (and sometimes especially if) they contradict earlier ones, like the 2013 statement - Freedia is very clear about being ambivalent about pronouns, and says things like "call me 'he, she, or it'" and "I'm not trans, I'm a gay man." So, yeah, there is no reason to default to "she". I think people were doing that due to the 2013 source, which is now out of date; probably the text it cites for preferring "she" should be removed for clarity.
While Freedia has no problem with being called "she", at least some of the time (usually by other queens - as in-group, gay male and queen speech), I've found that on WP, when articles default to "she/her", readers do tend to assume the subject is a trans woman. Freedia is very clear that this is not how he identifies. In the more recent statements, Freedia leads with "he". I think at this point, it would probably be more appropriate to use "he" or "they", or to avoid pronouns when not awkward. To be thorough, you might want to check if there's a more recent interview, and best if there's more than one, that in any way contradicts the "ambivalent" statements we have: Big Freedia#Gender and pronouns. But if not, I would support these changes. I follow Freedia on social media and have interacted with him a bit, and I think this is what would be more appropriate. - CorbieVreccan 22:01, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

It looks like the disruptive pronoun edits are being done by driveby IPs who aren't reading the article, let alone looking at sources or engaging on talk. Should we semi-protect the article? Also, there is still inconsistent pronoun usage throughout. - CorbieVreccan 22:41, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
