Why include fiction? edit

The lead says that fictional works are to be included. Why? What purpose does that serve? It will just invite trouble, IMHO.

In 2008, someone got upset about the "roller derby in popular culture" section that used to be in the main article and demanded it be removed. So I moved all the pop culture references off-site, to Wikia, as per some advice I saw somewhere on Wikipedia at the time. I tried to link to it for a while, but then ran afoul of the "we don't link to wikis" policy! I threw up my hands at that point.

Although I don't see such content as harmful, I do understand that there are a lot of people out there who consider popular culture / this-topic-in-fiction sections to be non-notable trivia, and they will delete that info on sight, quoting some policy or another. I would expect this to happen again if you start adding fictional references to roller derby and try to get the article to GA or FA status. Therefore I feel you will need to defend the inclusion of that content before adding it back in. —mjb (talk) 23:01, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
